Early birds keen to buy, sell
WAN - Monday, 15 Oct 2018 - Page 9

It is just after 6am, it is cold and rainy and a long line of vehicles
is snaking its way into an undercover carpark at Karrinyup Shopping Centre.

Amanda Harvey’s car, loaded to the roof, comes to a stop.

In the car in the bay alongside , her parents Sue and Graeme Purdy
are also loaded up.

The family springs into action, and before long have set up a makeshift stall
covered in bits of furniture, books, and all manner of other bric-a-brac ,
all behind a portable rack positively groaning with clothes.

All around them others follow suit, as the formerly empty carpark
 buzzes with activity.

Welcome to the Karrinyup swapmart, held almost every Sunday.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Scarborough,
it has been running for 28 years and, if yesterday’s turnout is any guide,
shows no sign of running out of steam even
in the age of electronic shopping.

It is the first time Mrs Harvey , from Currambine, and her parents,
from Jindalee, have gone to a swap meet as sellers
and they had spent about an hour on Saturday night loading the cars.

They say that rather than go down the online sale route,
the swapmart is a chance to offload a few unwanted items in one go.

Sellers pay $10 per car bay and by about 6.30am eager buyers
are already lining up outside the undercover area.

As the rain resumes, rotary club captain of the day,
Mike Sultanowsky, takes pity and gives the go-ahead to let the buyers
in a bit earlier than usual — at 6.50am.

The air fills with the clinkclink-clink of coins landing
in a bucket as the eager buyers toss in their $1 coins for entry,
kids free, all eager to get first crack at the bargains.

Ricardo Ebuen, his wife Roschel and kids Cyrus, Rhixchel and Cyrhix
are near the head of the queue after driving in from Gosnells.

Mr Ebuen says the swapmart is cheaper than the shops
and he is hoping to find some shoes, clothes and perhaps some bags.
Before long he has sorted the shoes for $2, a handful of jewellery
which set him back $1 or 50¢ a piece, and a handsome looking watch for $2.

Not far away another couple of first-time sellers,
Pamela Windram, from Churchlands, and her daughter Saskia Martinis,
have made their first sale — a fine-looking soda syphon, for $5.

They, too, have had a spring-clean and are offloading clothes,
shoes, kitchen appliances, board games, candle holders
 and a unique-looking wooden clock.
“We are hoping to sell it in one hit,” Ms Windram said.
“If not, it goes to Good Sammys.”

Nearby, Lathlain resident Lori Tuia has already got
a wooden samurai sword ($3) and boxing gloves for $5.
He has been a regular at the swapmart for about 20 years
and has snapped up quite a few bargains,
perhaps none better than robotic vacuum cleaners for $20 to $30 that
“just needed a new battery” .

Gavino Amora sells once or twice a month.

Yesterday he offered a chance to pick up an old Hot Wheels toy car for $1.
Or a monster truck for $3.

The rotary club says about 150 sellers attend
and about 220 bays are taken up on an average Sunday,
with some sellers using more than one bay.
Between 1400 and 1700 buyers attend.

Proceeds go to the club’s many charitable causes.
But it’s more than shopping.

“For some regulars it’s an outing,” Mr Sultanowsky said.

It is certainly worth the effort. Ms Windram said later
she was pleased with what she had sold.
And Mrs Harvey said they sold most of what they took.
“And we really enjoyed it,” she said.
