On Monday we were delighted to present the winner of the 2019 Fred Johnston Award
, Dr Mikaila Kilov, with her award and prize.
Named after our founding president the award goes the UWA medical school graduate
 with the highest aggregate marks.

After graduating from Perth College, Mikaila studied engineering at UWA,
however it did not take her long to swap to the biological sciences and genetics.
While studying, she developed a passion for public health,
particularly in rural and remote areas and in future is looking
 to specialise in infectious diseases.
Since graduating from medical school, Dr Kilov
has been working as an intern at Royal Perth.
Next year Dr Kilov has a Residency position at Broome Regional Hospital
– and will hopefully join the Rotary Club of Broome!

. She plans to use her scholarship to undertake a Master of Tropical Medicine
and International Health at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine,
developing skills in research methodology, public health and policy
and clinical management of childhood infections.

Dr Walker will then work as a research clinician in The Gambia,
 West Africa,
to complete her training before moving to the Northern Territory
to work as a paediatrician and public health advocate,
driving change in the underlying social factors of poor Indigenous child health.
