Whilst the
ongoing COVID crisis continues to affect everyday life, our Operations team
continue to adapt to ensure that we can respond around the
world. The team are currently scoping responses in Yemen (conflict), the
Philippines (Taal volcano) and Nepal (flooding), with active responses in
Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Ethiopia.
Climate-related disasters, like the recent floods in Germany and wildfires in
California, Canada and Siberia, illustrate the challenge facing us all. As with
COVID-19, it will be the most vulnerable that bear the brunt of climate change
and it will be left to organisations like ShelterBox to pick up the pieces. Our
response in Nigeria illustrates this perfectly, where people fleeing conflict
are then affected by wildfires, followed by floods.
For our sixth project in Nigeria, we’re working again with our partner ACTED. After severe fires, ShelterBox and ACTED are planning on distributing robust “Bama” type shelters to 1000 households. As the security context is so dynamic, with previously accessible areas becoming inaccessible (and vice-versa) specific locations will be determined throughout, as the project develops.
Extremist attacks,
severe weather conditions and the impact of coronavirus in the Lake Chad Basin
have resulted in a dire humanitarian crisis in the Far North region of
Cameroon. The area now hosts more than 114,000 refugees as well as 320,000 internally
displaced people. We have been working with our trusted partner IEDA Relief in
the Far North region since 2015 and have carried out projects both on-camp
(Minawao Camp) targeting refugees and off-camp, mainly targeting internally
displaced people

Beaton Park
on Dalkeith foreshore of the Swan River after seven years of sweat
and tears.
We were honoured to be able to contribute to the creation of an inclusive
public space
for people with disabilities and their families as one of the many
projects our Club work on.

Changeover to represent our club.
“Treemission© held another excellent tree planting event with SERCUL
at Canning on Saturday. Six Rotary clubs were represented
and together we planted 2,800 plants.
This took the total treemission Rotary tree planting
for this season to over 8,000
plants.
Como, EWA, Mill Point, Canning, Crawley Dalkeith and Southern Districts clubs enjoyed the day.
We
were joined by the Whaleback Scouts who provided eager support to planting.
Mill Point catered for the activity and the morning tea and sausage sizzle
was a treat
thank you MPRC.
Collectively, over the three planting events, $120
was raised for treemission©, and, some clubs have expressed a willingness
to make direct donations via the National Trust
(contact Alan Briggs for account details).
Many thanks go to Darren O’Brien from SERCUL
who arranged the planting sites and provided the plants.

Canning River environment.
Wednesday, 21st July was the Official Visit to the RC Freshwater Bay
by DG Dee Buckland and her husband Jonathan Weir.

DGs visits have certainly changed over the years and it's very obvious
that no exposure to the International Arena of Rotary at the International Assembly
due
to Covid has reflected in the presentation this year.
Sometimes all it takes is a drop of generosity to create ripples of positive impact in the world.
Recently new member Matt received a phone call from Helena College
who were looking to donate their old library books.
The word spread quickly and soon enough there were 4 other Schools
looking to donate books
- the end result being a pallets worth of childrens and young teenager books..
. yes a whole pallets worth!
To find a home for them, Nick through his network and contacts managed to reach
out to Kath, CEO from United Way WA who was delighted to receive our donation.
The books will be distributed throughout the State and used for programs
such as Painting the
Town REaD.

A tireless contributor and advocate in the Rotary and Rotaract world,

even though it was his Birthday

Before our Bunnings Sausage Sizzle last week,
the Squad known as “P3” led by President Nick had their catch-up over breakfast
. As you can see most of them were geared up ready for the sizzle
with Dean aka Animal back on a well deserved break.

As part of the Como Rotary sponsored Buddy Bench community project,
2 completed Buddy Benches were handed over to the Rotary Club of Gosnells,
for use by two local schools, Thornlie Primary & Thornlie
South Primary schools.
The Benches were constructed by Station Street Men's Shed (SSMS),
with materials kindly donated by Bunnings Cannington and Midalia Steel
. The Buddy Benches are part of the Primary school "Resilience Program",
which supports student mental health and
resilience training in the schools.

This community project is progressively being rolled out to D9465 Rotary Clubs
