10th of December is World Human Rights Day
and to mark the occasion,
we'll be holding our second annual Giving Day.
With over 113 million people currently made homeless
by disaster and conflict,
we plan to raise awareness of the issue with our
#ShelterIsAHumanRight campaign.
ShelterBox has just announced a response in Yemen,
where the UNHCR statistics are shocking:
- 7
years of conflict
- 20.7
million people need humanitarian support
- 4
million people displaced at the end of 2020
- 76%
of displaced people are women and children

~The Scarborough Clocktower~
The Scarborough Clocktower is a project that was conceived, designed
and built by Scarborough Rotary to commemorate the 150th Anniversary
of the State of Western Australia
and the 75th anniversary of Rotary International.
The club asked for input from the local community as to what they preferred
. The favourite option was a clock or clocktower so that surfers
- especially children
- knew when it was time to go home for lunch or tea.
The Clocktower was officially opened by
Hie Excellency the Governor - Sir
Wallace Kyle on
September 13th, 1979.
The Clocktower is on the Western Australian Register of
Historical places.
It has become the symbol of Scarborough Rotary's involvement
in the local community
since the Club's founding in 1956. There
are plaques on the clocktower commemorating the Club members
who have been

Dee’s Rotary experience commenced in 2002, when she joined
the North Berwick Rotary Club in Scotland.
There she experienced the Objects of Rotary in practice through numerous
hands-on community projects. Returning to Australia in 2009,
Dee joined the Rockingham Rotary club, where she implemented
the inaugural Rotary Rockingham Community Grants program.
After moving to Perth in 2011, Dee joined the Kalamunda Rotary Club
and served as President in 2016 - 2017
. Despite all these varied Rotary experiences and recently serving
as an Assistant District Governor, Dee says her role as District Governor
has been
all about learning.
Having done her 'homework' prior to visiting Karrinyup Rotary,
Dee said we should be proud of all we have done and all we are doing.
She mentioned Rotary's Seven Area of Focus - 1. Promoting Peace,
2. Fighting Disease, 3. Providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene
, 4. Saving Mothers and Children, 5. Supporting Education,
6. Growing Local Economies
and 7. Protecting the Environment.
Over time we have done it all and she encouraged us
to keep on keeping on.
Dee cited the memorable philosophy of the current RI President Shekhar Mehta
: ‘Service is the rent I pay for the space I occupy on this earth’.
He is a person who really 'walks the walk'.
Living in India, where women are traditionally expected to be subservient,
he is dedicated
to empowering women and girls.
The District 9455 focus for 2021/22 is on a number of key issues,
namely Homelessness; Diversity Equity & Inclusion;
Aboriginal Cultural Awareness;
Partnerships - in particular an emerging partnership between Rotary and ECU;
and Protecting our Environment.
Dee also mentioned the importance of branding is getting the Rotary message
out to the wider community.
Once again, she complimented our club on our attention to public image,
with our media wall and social media.
Finally, Dee told us about the
Australian Rotary Health Indigenous Health Scholarship Program
and
invited the club to pledge $250 in support of the program.
Presentation to Kay
District Governor Dee Buckland told us that, in addition to serving as
RC Karrinyup's Vocational Service Director, Kay Durrant
also serves on the District 9455 'My Home' committee
. Most recently she has taken on the Chair of the
FDV (Family Domestic Violence) Collective.
Dee called Kay to the podium and presented her with the
very beautiful 2021-2022 Rotary International theme scarf
commemorating 2021-2022 World President Shekhar Mehta's theme
"Serve to Change Lives".
Kay stated that she had often admired the scarf
and was delighted with her gift.

by Group 1 Assistant Governor Kenn Williams and our cluster clubs
at the City of Melville courtyard on the afternoon of November 16.
Representatives from the Rotary Clubs of Applecross, Attadale, Booragoon and Melville
gave interesting presentations about their clubs to a small number of local volunteers
. Attadale President Elect Bev Moffat gave a very informative presentation
that led to one of the volunteers attending the club’s
last meeting.
Karrinyup Rotary has been privileged to support
Riding for the Disabled Carine for eighteen years.
Led by builder Ross, together with engineer Stuart, the club was integral
in providing the leadership, advice, consultancy,
and technical expertise to convert RDA's need for an all-weather facility
into a proposal that could be submitted for both approval and funding for the facility,
which opened in 2019. At the recent renaming ceremony to Danjoo Koorliny,
one family told how the arena has provided an incredibly important place
within the community and especially for their family.
The club subsequently received an email and photos from Fiona and Andrew,
which tell a beautiful Rotary story, well worth sharing
. This is why we do
what we do!
There is no question that this arena provides an incredibly important place
within the community and certainly in the life of our family.
As you’re aware, James has been involved for nearly 3 years
and the progress he has made has been unmistakable.
He started RDA as a little boy who was severely traumatised by heart surgery,
subsequent life-support 2x with emergency interventions
and so many other medical complications.
When he first sat on a horse, he was terrified - now, it’s the absolute joy of
his week!
The confidence it has given him is remarkable, but the physical therapy aspect
has led to greater gross and fine motor skills, resulting in the ability
to write his name just this past month.
This is such a huge achievement. The smile on his face in this photo says it all
and he now happily sits, backwards, sideways, waves to me with both arms
and can now use reins.
The Arena has provided a safe covered space to utilise in winter and summer.
For us this was particularly significant as James also
has a lung defect and on continuous prophylactic antibiotics
(the same regime as a child with cystic fibrosis).
Being immune deficient and knowing that he is protected from
the elements in winter has been a necessary and vital element to him riding.
Words cannot begin to describe the difference Carine RDA
has made to James and therefore, our lives also - thank you.
To now have Josh involved in Horse Vaulting is just fabulous.
He is thriving and has his sights set on 2032 Olympics already!
To have this available within our own community and be affordable,
is such a privilege and gift.
We have explained to Josh how extraordinary this is
(instead of driving an hour and it only being an elite sport)
and we are sure it will remain a firm and amazing memory of both their
formative years.
We realise this is only a small part of everything you do.
Rotary truly does impact and change lives forever -
we treasure and recognize the significance of the gift of horse riding within
our very own community and the incredible impact it is having not only
for both our
boys, but therefore our family as well.
Warm regards Fiona and Andrew,
Joshua and James

Our community project supporting children's mental health
and well being in the playground
at Primary Schools, known as the “Buddy Bench” project,
continues to grow, with the wonderful support of our
Community Partners at the Manning Mens Shed (MMS)
. Allan Waugh and James Turner at MMS constructed these very sturdy benches,
for South Perth Primary School, and Curtin Primary School,
and also kindly assisted with the delivery of the benches.
Como Rotarian, Kevin Saunders, as Project Coordinator,
has been pivotal in organising the placement of the benches at these local schools
,
which aligns to their internal well being programs of support for the children.
We also greatly appreciate the donation of materials by Madalia Steel
and Hartway Galvani sing, in addition to MMS for kindly donating the jarrah timber
used for the benches, including their
construction time.
A great example of community collaboration for the
benefit of our local community
It was another very successful Rotary Amblin/Busselton weekend.
On Saturday morning some members and their families headed to the pool,
some went to wineries and some wandered around the Lions Market in Dunsborough.
In the afternoon, Donnah, Allie and the kids headed off to the new kids’ playground
on the Busselton foreshore and the big kids headed off to the new Shelter Brewery.
Then on Saturday night we all came together for
the traditional family BBQ.
