News and information for Districts 9450, 9460, 9470

--------------------------------------------
Rotary Club of Booragoon

On behalf of President Kasun, the International Committee and Club members,
I wish to extend an invitation to you to attend a
Fellowship and Fundraising BBQ on Tuesday, 23rd February, 2010.
It will be held at the South of Perth Yacht Club
in Archie’s Bar starting at 6:00pm.
Other guests are being invited from Groups 1 and 2, District 9460

and the clubs that will make up Group 1 in District 9465 next Rotary year.
Di Roberts PHF, a member of the RC of Boorgoon,

has worked tirelessly for various projects in Ethiopia for the last seven years.
In the early days she was greatly supported by RC of Melville
and the Inner Wheel Club of Melville.
To raise funds she held many fundraising events
that included sausage sizzles, quiz nights, morning teas
and donating guest speaker donations to her cause.

It was soon realized that education held the key to a better future.

A school that provided a free but high standard of education became her focus
. This is no easy project, but with support from Jaquie Gilmour
who founded the Hope For Children School,
her dream has become a reality.
The school of St Yared opened its doors on 16th September 2009.
The school’s motto is ‘Fighting Poverty Through Education’.
Di is so passionate about her project that her eldest granddaughter Jana

and family have based themselves in Ethiopia for the foreseeable future
. Second granddaughter Georgia,
accompanied Di on her most recent trip last December.
One project leads on to the next and The School of St Yared is no exception.

Many of the young students live more than an hour’s travel
from the school and although there is one school bus,
there is an urgent need for another.
A Toyota HIACE can be purchased for AUD$22 000 or 220 000 Ethiopian Birr.
This will carry 16 children.
There are enough funds to run and maintain the bus.
Di is willing to speak to any club at any time about the project.

The RC of Booragoon is endeavouring to make contact
with the DG and clubs in District 9200 in order to have a matching grant.
So come to the Fellowship and BBQ fundraiser on 23rd February.

RC of Booragoon is looking forward to seeing you there.
Jean McKinnon
International Committee Chair

Rotary Club of Mount Barker

The Rotary Mount Barker is a small club with just 14 members.
We do, however, put on some brilliant events during the year.
To kick off 2010 we hosted the Australia Day
celebrations for the town of Mount Barker.
This involves the club serving breakfast to the community,
with the help of other volunteers and the ladies of Inner Wheel,
before the official ceremonies get underway.
We also present a community service award annually.
Usually the event is held outside in the grounds of Plantagenet Winery
but this year the weather was inclement
and we opted for an inside venue.

Welcome to visiting Rotarian PP Carl and Kirsten:
Carl outlined his position;
that hosting an exchange student from NSW a few years ago,
whetted his appetite to visit Australia.
He and Kirsten have visited NSW previously
and having now retired he wanted to visit the world famous wheatbelt.
They arrived 7.am Friday having departed Copenhagen on Wednesday,
and found that the home airport had closed due to weather after they left.
Staying in York since Saturday they have been encouraged
by Rotarians met
and today visited the farm of David and Chris Bolt at Corrigin.
