Clubs celebrate Rotary's 105th birthday
By Arnold R. Grahl Rotary International News -- 23 February 2010

From kicking a soccer ball in Cape Town, South Africa,
to illuminating prominent landmarks with the End Polio Now message,
Rotarians around the world celebrated 23 February,
the 105th anniversary of the first Rotary club meeting.
On this day in 1905, Paul Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Hiram Shorey,
and Silvester Schiele met to talk about their personal and professional experiences.
Harris then unfolded his general plan for a club.
Out of this simple beginning sprang the
world's first international service organization,
which has now grown to include more than 1.2 million members
in over 33,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.
Rotary International helped celebrate the milestone
by spelling out End Polio Now on the side
of RI World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, USA,
and by joining districts 6440 and 6450 in plans
to light up the Wrigley Building in downtown Chicago
with the End Polio Now logo..
Other sites scheduled for illumination this week include
the Pyramid of Khafre in Egypt;
the Taipei Arena in Taiwan;
the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain;
the Old Port Captain’s Office on the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town,
with world-famous Table Mountain as the backdrop;
the Obelisk of Buenos Aires, Argentina;
the Lake Marathon Dam overlooking the historic
Marathon Memorial Battlefield in Greece;
and the Royal Palace at Caserta in Italy.
In Cape Town, one of the host cities for the 2010 World Cup,
a Kick Polio Out of Africa awareness campaign
will launch with the symbolic kicking of a soccer ball signed
by Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu,
who had polio as a child.
The ball, which will be auctioned to the highest bidder,
will then travel through 22 polio-affected countries
en route to the RI Convention in Montréal, Québec, Canada, in June.
In Puerto Rico, the House of Representatives
has approved a measure setting aside the week of 23 February
to be celebrated as "the week of the Rotary movement."
In addition, clubs have found a variety of creative ways to celebrate Rotary's birthday,
also known as World Understanding and Peace Day:
Members of Rotary clubs in Nepal
will be taking part in a peace rally in Biratnagar.
The Rotary Club of Scottsbluff/Gering, Nebraska, USA,
is celebrating Rotary's 105th birthday by marking the 90th year
since it received its club charter
with a fundraiser to expand the local library.
The Rotary Club of Canton, Georgia, USA,
holds its weekly meeting on Tuesdays and will be celebrating with a large cake,
complete with big 1, 0, and 5 candles.
The club will also be donating $105 to PolioPlus.
The Rotary Club of Tumkur City, Karnataka, India,
has conducted a free dental checkup for children
at a Red Cross school for the deaf and mute.
The Rotary Club of Milledgeville, Georgia, USA,
has invited Rotarians, families, veterans,
and community members to a large Peace Day celebration
at the peace monument at the county courthouse.
All 21 districts in Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland
will be taking part in a
Thanks for Life Week to raise funds for End Polio Now.

Town Halls Go Blue to End Polio Now

The Boulder and Kalgoorlie Town Halls will be glowing blue from tomorrow night,
Tuesday 16 February until Tuesday 2 March 2010
to promote Rotary International’s End Polio Now campaign
Mayor Ron Yuryevich said the project, which launches on Tuesday,
raises public awareness of Rotary International’s End Polio Now campaign.
“The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is proud to work with
the three local Rotary Clubs to help spread the
‘End Polio Now’ message,” he said.
“People will notice that the buildings are blue,
and hopefully this will inspire them to ask why,
and find out what they can do to help end polio.
“Illuminating two of our City’s most iconic buildings is a small step
to help Rotary International promote this global project.
thanks Esther

PDG Ron and Glenys are back from their NID Polio trip in India
and were actively involved in immunising the children under 5 in Vizag.
PDG Ron also organised a team from Victoria, District 9820
to also join them.
None of the Victorians had ever visited these parts of India,
as it is not part of the normal tourist trail, the slums took them back a little,
but as Ron explained to them all,
'They do not know what they don't have,
so they are happy with their lot'.
Whilst there they visited the King George Hospital
where the Mother Hood Program is now showing signs of great success,
the child mortality rate has dropped
and the baby weight has risen to an average of 6 pounds.
Three months before the birth date,
the mothers to be are given a supplement for their meals.
If you do not work you have no money to purchase food,
their society is different to ours,
the men of the house are fed first
and if there is not enough to go round then someone
who is not working will miss out.
The supplement will help mother and baby through to birth
and also when mother lactates,
the supplement will continue until mother returns to work in 8-10 weeks.
This is a great Health and Hunger program.
They also visited a Polio rehab centre, which touched them deeply,
the Indian Rotarians have put in a tremendous effort.
Where the residents make candles, stuffed toys, incense sticks
and learn to look after themselves, and becoming self sufficient.
The rural school which we and the local Rotarians
have supported in the past, always inspires us to do more for the students
who don't have the same opportunities
as the city based students,
the school was built by the Rotarians from Vizag Central.
The children there are hard working and just pain fantastic.
They know firsthand what poverty is
and that Education is the way out to a better life,
and believe me they work hard at just that.
Our Aids orphanage, Aids hospice and old age care facility is 'Fantastic'
. All the hard work that has been done over the last few years is now paying off,
"Hug Me I Can't Hurt You " is now working,
the stigma of HIV has been, in the most part, broken.
In the local school and with the immediate relatives
to the extent that Grandparents and Aunts and Uncles
are now taking the children into their homes
and the orphanage now has only 18 in residence.
Reports on the Micro credit program set up three years ago
are also extremely encouraging, it is working well.
The Rotary Blood bank always amazes all who visit,
quite incredible words are hard to find to describe the wonderful workings,
Rotary you are fantastic.
The Diagnostic centre, a nominal charge centre where the unfortunate
and poverty stricken can come and have their ailments checked over
and prescribe the course of action.
Without this service the locals and those in the surrounding rural areas
would just have to suffer and go untreated.
They are in desire need of an ambulance-diagnostic vehicle,
to act as a ambulance and a vehicle to visit the
Tribal areas to ascertain the health, wellbeing
and have their ailments looked into,
as for most of them never have the chance to visit a medical centre.

There is always more to each visit than time allows for
but we will all keep doing what we can to help the less fortunate
than ourselves in our own way.

Change is coming
Beginning with the April 2010 issue,
Rotary World will be replaced with Rotary Leader,
an interactive, online publication featuring practical information
and links to help club and district officers meet the challenges they face every day.
Current club presidents, district governors,
and subscribers who have provided accurate e-mail addresses
will receive Rotary Leader automatically,
but any Rotarian may subscribe to this free publication at any time.
Club presidents-elect, district governors-elect, club secretaries,
and assistant governors are especially encouraged to subscribe.
Like Rotary World,
Rotary Leader will be published in nine languages –
English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish,
and Swedish.
Rotary Leader will be an online-only publication;
print editions will not be available.
Because Rotary World is transitioning to an electronic publication,
paid subscriptions and corrected mailing labels are no longer being accepted.
This publication is not available for purchase.
Questions about the transition from Rotary World to Rotary Leader may be directed to
rotary.leader@rotary.org .

Rotary Club of Mosman Park

Hello Phil,
We would greatly appreciate your inclusion into your next Blog
of the attached third party's report on our
Rotary Club of Mosman Parks' Mens Shed Project .
Regards,
Chris Stuart
Secretary
Rotary Club of Mosman Park

There was a big turnout of men interested in a
Men's Shed planned for Mosman Park.
Mates get cracking on shed
More than 40 men met this week to plan a men’s shed for Mosman Park.
A committee of eight was formed to work on getting formal approval
to use land being offered by the town council.
The site is at Tom Perrott Oval on McCabe Street at the edge of a carpark
about 200m from the nearest house.
Mayor Ron Norris said it was the best of several sites that had been considered
and the council supported the project as very important
to the health of men in the Mosman Park, Cottesloe, Peppermint Grove area.
The committee will meet this week to start work on overall planning,
aiming to have the shed up within two years.
John Law, from Mosman Park Rotary Club,
said the club was putting up $3000 in seed capital for planning work.
The shed would be a fully equipped workshop
and operate as a community meeting place vital for men’s health.
He said: “This week I visited the Fremantle men’s shed
which has been going for four years
and it works as a place for men who want to get out of the house
for a day to meet and discuss things.
“They contribute to the community,
mentoring others, sometimes younger people.
“The shed also works as a place to give out information on men’s health –
mental and physical – which is a vital issue.”
Mr Law said the size and fitout of the shed
would be whatever the members decided –
he suggested about 10m by 30m designed to be extended in 10m modules.
At Fremantle, members use a council shed,
which was home to a pigeon club for many years.
Benches are made from recycled timber
and most of the power tools are on loan.
They pay $50 a year;
the shed is open 9am to 4pm weekdays and some Saturday mornings
. Members make toys and furniture,
do sculpture and have computer lessons.
The Mosman Park shed group wants to hear from interested people –
and particularly sponsors who want to get involved.
Mr Law is at 9203 8887.
Australia has 400 men’s sheds –
including 80 in Victoria where 40 were set up last year.
WA has 30.

SMILE

Peter Garrett has rejoined his band

There once was a king who lived in two-story grass hut.
Every holiday the king demanded to be given a new throne as a gift.
As soon as a new throne arrived,
he would store the old throne on the second level of his hut
and use the new one instead.
But one day the hut collapsed from the weight of all the thrones
, and everyone was crushed and killed
.The moral of this story?
Those who live in grass houses shouldn't stow thrones.
