History of the Rotary Bell

In 1922, U.S. Rotarians organized an attendance contest;
the challenge was that the losing clubs would join
in giving the winning club a prize.
The Rotary Club of New York City was declared the winner
and to them was awarded as a prize a bell from a popular patrol boat,
which was placed on wood that came from HMS "Victory"
, Admiral Nelson's vessel at the battle of Trafalgar.

Since then, the bell used in Rotary meetings started to represent,
as on the ships, order, discipline and the time to guide us
through the weekly hour and a half meetings.
The bell informs us with its sound the beginning of the Rotary meeting,
at which time people present should stand,
same as at the end, in order to salute the national and Rotary flags.
The gavel symbolizes the authority invested in the Rotarian
elected to the highest position in Rotary,
and through them , reminds those present of their authority.
When presidents transmit their positions to their successors
at the end of their mandate,
they give the bell their last hit turning the gavel over
to their successor, symbolizing the transfer of authority

Around the Clubs

Rotary Club of Karrinyup

It is always one of our favourite meetings of the year -
and this week was no exception -
when we held our first 'getting to know you' introductory presentation
for our current District 9455 Rotary Youth Exchange Inbound student,
Hannah. Apart from a great turn-out of our members -
we were also lucky enough to have members
of all four of Hannah's Host Families,
a couple of her Exchange Friends
and some of her teachers from Warwick Senior High School along.

We were all treated to a wonderful presentation on her homeland
which included a run-down of German foods, fads, history,
sports, education, landscape and culture -
as well as an introduction to her school and family at home.
Well done Hannah - with an attitude and aptitude like yours
- as well as some fabulous Host Families -
we know you're in for a very special year!

The Filth, the Commissioner of Police Karl O'Callaghan's band”.
“It was a masquerade ball of about 120 people.
“Youth has been our focus in raising money for the community,
but in particular we're interested in the mental health aspect
which has come to the fore over the last year or so.”
Club vice-president Gareth Talbot said Rotary
had a close relationship with PYMS.
“There's different things we can look at doing,
but that's the key thing; its an ongoing relationship,” he said.
Ms Britton said the fundraising conducted by Rotary
over the years had supported a number of programs.
“We've had quite an ongoing partnership with Rotary,
which has included their support for the Peel Mobile Health Service,
which has also been supported by Rotary in Pinjarra,” she said.
“Because of that support we've been able to offer counselling
after the bushfires and get out there into Waroona and other areas.”
Support is available by calling
Kids Helpline on 1800 551 800,

Just spent a week in Vietnam helping a pretty dedicated group
of volunteer medical and dental practitioners
and support teams from Oz providing help to Vietnam's poor.
1050 dental patients - all children (fillings, extractions and root canals etc),
980 Medical examinations - mostly elderly,
and 50 successful Cataract operations -
enabling the blind to once more be useful to their family
and regain a degree of independence
. My very highest admiration for the AusVet Charity Foundation
 and the team
