Holy sheet!
WA charities tuck into
a bonanza of
mining sector linen
- David Allan-Petale
Rotary Club of Mill Point
WA's mining boom may be over but as mining companies
switch
contracts and change up their operations there is a silver lining.
Pallet after pallet of new and barely
used linen from mining projects
in WA's north is being shipped
to charities in Perth and overseas
- and it's all thanks to the quick thinking
of a bloke
who went on holiday then found himself at the centre
of
a web of laundry logistics.
Chris Herrmann is a member of the Rotary Club of Mill
Point
and was on a sabbatical in the Pilbara
when he got a tip off that a batch
of bed linen from a nearby mining camp
had become surplus to needs.
"I would have been just another voice up here bemoaning the
possibility
of more wastage if it wasn't for the enthusiasm and professionalism
of the Rotary Club of Mill Point members to make it all happen",
Mr
Hermann said.
He emailed several members of his
Rotary club
asking if they knew of any charities that could use the
linen
- otherwise destined for the tip.
Within an hour, Mr Hermann was flooded with emails
and text
messages listing a huge range of places in need.
So he tracked down the source of the linen and met
with
representatives of Rio Tinto,
who said he was welcome to nine pallets
of surplus linen.
Rotary Club member Gerry McGann was swiftly appointed
Bed
Linen Project Co-ordinator and organised storage space
at the Toscana
olive oil warehouse for the bedding
and big rigs to truck it down to
Perth through freight companies
Centurion and Toll.
Over 2000 bed sheets and other linen were sent to
eight different charities
in Perth, East Timor, Thailand and Laos.
But things were just getting started.
"I have another 40 pallets of linen," said Mr
Hermann,
calling up the club from the Pilbara again.
"This lot's from
Fortescue Metals Group."
47 pallets of linen holding 10,500 items with a
value
of more than $100,000 were trucked in,
with Rapallo Group
providing extra warehousing space.
All of this surplus linen has mostly come as a result of
service contract changes for mining camps operating in the Pilbara,
with old
fits outs being stripped away.
'Gerry's Shop' as Rotary's operation has now become known
as is preparing to receive another possible 50 pallets of linen
from mining
camps up north in the next week or so.
Mr McGann said club members are looking at setting up
another
linen distribution centre in the eastern states to deal
with this
unexpected windfall from WA's mining sector.
"Just
seeing the smile on so many faces of the receiving charities,
has made this
project so worthwhile," Mr McGann said.
