Join us on 24 October for World Polio Day and share your voice that we are closer than ever to creating a polio-free world. Rotary will host its fourth annual World Polio Day: Making History live stream event at 18:00 EDT (UTC-4) from the headquarters of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The event brings together the biggest names in the global fight to eradicate polio. Watch live on Endpolio.org.

Polio this week in Afghanistan
·         No new cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1)
were reported in the past week.
The total number of WPV1 cases for 2016 remains eight.
The most recent case had onset of paralysis
on 11 August in Paktika province,
close to the border with Pakistan.
·         No WPV1 environmental positive samples
 have been reported in 2016.
The most recent samples were collected
 on 27 December 2015
– one in Jalalabad district of Nangarhar province
and the second in the city of Kabul.
·         Efforts continue to further strengthen immunization
and surveillance activities across the country.

Polio this week in Nigeria
·         No new cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1)
were reported in the past week.
The total number of WPV1 cases for 2016 remains four.
The most recent case had onset of paralysis
 on 21 August,
from Monguno Local Government Area (LGA), Borno.
·         Regional outbreak response in north-eastern Nigeria
 continues to be implemented,
both in response to the WPV1 cases detected in August
and to the circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2
 (cVDPV2) isolates,
detected in Borno from an environmental sample
 (collected in March)
and a healthy contact of one of the WPV1 cases
(from August).
·         The emergency regional outbreak response
is being implemented under the guidance
of the Polio Eradication Emergency Operations Center (EOC),
led by the Government of Nigeria
and with support from WHO and GPEI partners.
The outbreak response is being coordinated with neighbouring countries
and in the broader humanitarian emergency response
context affecting the region.
 Similar approaches to outbreak response
were successfully implemented in previous years
in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa.

Polio this week in Pakistan
·         No new cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1)
were reported in the past week.
The total number of WPV1 cases for 2016 remains 15
. The most recent case had onset of paralysis
on 3 September, from Sujawal, Sindh.
·         No new WPV1 positive environmental samples
were reported in the past week.
Continued detection of environmental positives
throughout 2016 confirms that virus transmission
remains geographically widespread across the country,
despite strong improvements being achieved.

·         Efforts continue to further strengthen immunization
and surveillance activities in all provinces of the country.

Our Rotary Club has been a great supporter

Rotary plays a huge part in many important areas
beyond our club’s boundaries.
We are privileged to be part of it.

Phil then led on our club's 2016 Hat Day
commemoration with a light hearted judging of members' hats.
Carine Tavern staff member Aaron joined in the fun
and chose the most fashionable and most ridiculous hats.
Prize winners, David Blackledge and John Burt,
seen here with Phil, each took home a bottle of wine.

Rotary Club of Mandurah City

Members of the Rotary Club of Mandurah City and Hannes
On behalf of the learners, staff and governing body
of Crestview Primary I wish to extend our gratitude
and appreciation for the donation of books
which we received for our library.
I have attached several photos of some learners
with books which were purchased with the donation.
There was great excitement when learners learnt
that we had been lucky enough to receive the donation
and they have been waiting impatiently for the new books
to be processed and made available to them.
There were queues of learners waiting for an opportunity
to be the first to borrow the new books today.
Each book has a leaflet pasted onto the inside cover
which reminds everyone that that particular book
was donated by your Rotary clubs.
I am also sending an article to our local newspaper today
and when this is published I will forward a copy to you.
Once again thank you so much for assisting
in promoting literacy amongst our learners.

Regards
Belinda Coutts -

Supported by the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay, Perth, Australia.
This project provides free health care to children

  •  and rehabilitation; and
  • to allow visiting surgeons and nurses
  • to volunteer their time and services to help.

Mooro Country Tours Project Underway

Some time ago our Club was approached to assist
the Mooro County Tour Group to provide seating
at Lake Gwelup Reserve for members of their cultural tour groups.
Mooro Country Tours are a not-for-profit organisation
run in association with
Wadjak Northside Aboriginal Resource Centre Balga,
 who provide walking tours -
cultural experiences with local Aboriginal elders.
Participants are able to learn about local Aboriginal people
and their contribution to the City of Stirling.

At first the idea was to provide the design work
 and funding for a couple of park benches for participants;
but with the enthusiasm and support of our
Community Services Committee, the project (and costs)
grew to include a decking area -
and became financially out of reach of our budget.
However, in order to complete the project
we have since been successful in applying
for a Federal Government grant through
 the Stronger Communities Programme.

Work has now commenced on the project,
which is expected to be completed by the end of October.
With all the recent rain, Lake Gwellup Reserve
is currently looking the best it has in many years
so be sure to drop by and take a look.

What do you see??

What a beautiful parrot,
 no?
Look at all those colors, those beautiful feathers,
 that elegant tail

And then, after you have admired it, look closer, closer,\
stare at the picture until you realize that this isn't a parrot at all:
it's a woman meticulously made up to look like a bird.
The above photo is the work of artist
and former body painting champion Johannes Stoetter
who spent four weeks planning this shoot,
five hours setting it up, four hours painting the model,
and another hour trying to find the pose
that most resembled that of a real parrot.

The result is beautiful and almost infuriating in its execution.

thanks Clive B
