Rotary Club of Victoria Park

At our meeting on June 27th , Joan Sutherland spoke about the Haven.
It is a centre where she provides wholesome meals
for the homeless at very low prices.
Joan was introduced by Ian Watson who whose family
own the building and rents it out at a rate which allows her to operate
. The site is the old East Victoria Park Post Office
and where Peter Stewart ran the Christian Centre for Social Action for over 20 years.
At the time Joan was looking for somewhere to start providing meals
for the homeless this building became available
and it fitted in perfectly with the type of activity Ian’s family’s wishes.
Ian spoke about some of the renovations which were done
 including the removal of asbestos
and the difficulty in removing the safe which was used in the Post Office era.
In order to provide food Joan needed a kitchen
and again her timing was perfect.
Miss Maud were refurbishing in the Belmont shopping centre
and consequently donated their old kitchen.
Joan’s dream was coming together and she mentioned
how elated she was when she had 5 people come in for a meal.
 That was nine months ago
. The Haven now does 80 to 100 meals day
and provides breakfast and Lunch
and she is going to start doing dinners as well.
Funds are raised by selling used furniture and other items in the shop
. A sausage sizzle on Saturday morning also brings in funds.
Many volunteers come off the street offering to help
and Aldi provides a lot of food.
Joan also has labourers, who work for the dole, come in.
Currently Joan is arranging for a specially equipped van,
where the homeless can shower, to come in once a week
and also for a doctor to visit regularly.
In recognition of what Joan has achieved in just a short period of time,
she was presented with a Paul Harris Fellow.
