Palm Beach Rotary Club delivers
nesting boxes to Penguin Island

August 2nd, 2018, 01:00PMWritten by Vanessa Schmitt

PALM Beach Rotary Club delivered 20 nesting boxes
to Penguin Island on Monday .
They were carried to the island in two trips
and will replace crumbling old boxes.

The boxes were made by club member Des Mant
in the workshop behind his Shoalwater home.

Once completed, other club members painted them.
A group of Rotarians moved them from the backyard
into a cleaned-up rubbish truck owned
 by Rotarian Andy Chapman.

They then carted the hefty boxes down the jetty,
loaded them onto past president Rick Dawson’s boat,
then unloaded at the other end and carted them
to a Department of Parks and Wildlife
building on the island.
Mr Dawson said fairy penguin chicks had struggled
in the old nesting boxes in the warmer weather.
“These boxes have been designed to avoid that,
with air vents on the sides and raised insulated roofs
allowing hot air to rise and dissipate,” he said.

“The nesting boxes imitate penguin burrows,
which are tunnels that lead to a nest ‘bowl’
or cave in which they can stand.”

The WILD WEST BIKE TOUR (WWBT)
is a socially competitive team/individual event
raising community awareness and funds for charity.
Whilst the emphasis on The Wild West Bike Tour
is on participation and community engagement,
 funds raised assist our primary beneficiary;
WA Police Legacy in their support of surviving families
 of deceased police officers.

Proceeds will also support Rotary Club of Batavia Coast
and their charities including local, state
and National and International that it supports.

Sunday 29 July 2018

With volunteers from the local community and the Rotary Club of Matilda Bay
all helped with this year’s city planting of 2500 native shrubs
in the Charles Stokes Reserve on the corner
of Club Avenue and Luth Ave, Daglish.
The planting of native plants as habitat for wildlife
while reducing the city’s water use in its parks and reserves
in different areas of the City of Subiaco
is an event run by Planet Ark.

Volunteers supplied their own gloves, and tools.
Refreshments and a bbq was provided by

Rotary Club of Mandurah Districts

President Geoff Winton, Rotary Club of Mandurah Districts,
presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Taryn MacDonald,
Marketing Manager, Halls Head Central Vicinity Shopping Centre.
Taryn is a great supporter of Rotary in Mandurah.
She has enabled the Sunday Swap Meet at the Halls Head Central to flourish,
enabling hundreds of people to buy and sell unwanted items.
Community organisations rotate the event to spread the local fundraising,
also providing space for a sausage sizzle with items supplied by local retailers.
A successful Community Mental Health Forum
with a focus on Youth at Risk,
was held inside the Halls Head Shopping Centre in June 2018.
The Rotary Club of Mandurah Districts worked with Taryn
to enable a large area to be set up for over a hundred guests,
and space for fifteen mental health service support agencies.
Five guest speakers provided valuable information
and a question and answer session, held after a refreshment break,
was extremely well supported and appreciated.
Taryn has also enabled the Rotary Club of Mandurah Districts
access to the popular yellow money spinner outside Coles
for August and September this year.
Funds received will be used to support local community projects.

Thanks Taryn, and Vicinity Centres,
for your continuing local community support.
