E ach year, thousands of visitors to Rotary headquarters experience Room 711,
a recreation of the office where, on 23 February 1905,
Paul Harris met with three acquaintances to start a club based on
“mutual cooperation and informal friendship.”
The original office was located in the former Unity Building
on Dearborn Street in downtown Chicago.
In 1980, local Rotary members rented it and gathered period furnishings
and fixtures to re-create the look and feel of an early 20th century office.
Later, they organized the Paul Harris 711 Club to continue supporting
the room and the story it tells.
When the Unity Building was set to be demolished in 1989,
they dismantled the room and arranged to rebuild it later at Rotary world headquarters.
The room was initially recreated on the 16th floor of One Rotary Center.
We relocated it to the first floor as part of a remodeling in 2014,
improving access for visitors who come to Evanston.
We wanted to give our members around the world an opportunity
to experience the room without traveling to Evanston
so we created a virtual tour.
Virtual visitors can guide themselves through the room and
click on select items to learn about them and about Chicago
during the era when Paul Harris moved to Chicago and started Rotary.
This year, 23
February, marks the 116th anniversary of Rotary.

Safety
Recognition for rotary WA DRIVER PROGRAM
Rotary WA, Districts 9455 & 9465 have been announced Finalists
in the 2021 Injury Matters Injury Prevention & Safety Promotion Awards
for their Rotary WA Driver Education “RWADE” program.
Winners will be announced at a breakfast on Thursday 25th March
at the
Duxton Hotel Perth.
The finalist category
"Outstanding Achievement in Collaboration for a Safer WA”
is a tribute to Stakeholders, Community and Schools plus
Rotarians in Metropolitan and Regional (Geraldton, Northam and Pinjarra)
who have tirelessly worked with Rotary clubs
over many years to establish a
successful program in their efforts to save young lives.
RWADE fits well with and supports the Driving Change
– Road safety strategy for Western Australia 2020 – 2030
aligning with schools in their Keys for Life Program.
Last year 2,500 – 3000 students were reached state-wide,
with the three Geraldton Clubs running
the largest Regional program since 2015.
“Receiving this recognition is very exciting and a credit
to so many who have provided ongoing support since our first program”
said Rotary WA Coordinator Lindsey
Francis.
The program run with WA Rotary and partners WA Police and St John Ambulance,
involves Year 10 -11 students before they get their drivers licenses,
educating them on road safety including the law and road rules,
risks, inattention and driving hazards in a bid to reduce
the number of road fatalities and serious injuries to young drivers.
“For Rotary, running RWADE is crucial, we want to raise awareness
well in advance for our young people, before they get behind
the wheel of a car or motorbike.
We want them to remember and to recall the many areas of safety
and care for others, before they become drivers or
passengers.
Road statistics have become a huge concern,
there are too many accidents and we need to work
at stopping the loss of life NOW!
We need to ensure that young drivers grow up to become adults,
and not another road statistic.”
Obtaining a driver’s licence is a dream for most young people,
but learning the skills whilst driving on our regional roads
has for many come at a cost!
RWADE is all about education of young drivers before
they get behind the
wheel of a car.
In Geraldton the largest run program regionally, the program
includes a Road Train and Motor Bike to raise awareness
of the safety aspects of these large vehicles on our regional roads.
A motor bike is placed at the front of the truck to become invisible,
once students climbed into the cab they cannot see the Motor Bike,
an eye opener for students involved.
The next program in Geraldton will commence
on Thursday 11th March 2021 at Towns Football Club
and volunteers from the public are welcome to assist on the
day.

member, Boris Divas, is just one of thousands of volunteer firefighters in Western Australia
- and like many of then, he was
kept busy during the recent Woorooloo/Gidgegannup fires.
Below are his tips for anyone in a red zone during a fire breakout:
Exercise caution and follow this simple plan to maintain a sense of control
over the situation:
1. Have a bag packed with 3 days worth of clothing - include snacks if any
available
2. Have a place to stay organised, in case there is an emergency
3. Prepare any important documents or cherished memories that will never be
recovered again
4. Tell them, if they want absolute security given how close the fire is to
their area,
to start acting on this plan as soon as reasonably possible.

This week the club held our annual High School Scholarship
night at the
Tower Hotel.
The club for a number of years now has awarded the David James,
David Kennedy and Mark Bailey Scholarships,
all named after 3 club members or associates that have contributed
is a big way to the history of the Radio Auction,
which now funds the Scholarships.
The Scholarship provides financial assistance to students
entering high school and provides $1000 a year for a 3 year period
to assist with school
fees, uniforms, books and activities.
For the first time this year, we also had two Scholarships Sponsored
thanks to two generous individuals. Kyle McGinn MLC
and Simone Pickering both approached us at the Community Expo
and expressed interest in getting involved
in the scholarship project.
Kyle also attended on Tuesday as a guest speaker to talk
about his role in the Region as the Member for Mining and Pastoral
and the up coming election.
Unfortunately, Simone was unable to attend.
So this year the following scholarships were presented,
Mark Bailey Scholarship - Camila Carvajal
Goldfields Baptist College
David Kennedy Scholarship - Andrea George
Kalgoorlie Boulder Community High School
David James Scholarship - Maria Ayre
John Paul College
Kyle McGinn MLC Scholarship - Daniel Glide
Kalgoorlie Boulder Community High School
Simone Pickering Scholarship - Sophie Barton
John Paul College
We are hoping these students will be future RYLA and RYPEN
candidates
and potential Rotary Exchange students.
Well done to our Youth services director Andy La Londe

A busy and enjoyable night with visiting Rotarians, Baldivis PP Mark Chaston

Today Raylene and I went up to Ocean Keys Shopping Centre.
It was great to see our paint the town REaD space
being utilised by a number of families.
Please feel free to take your children to have a
look
over the weekend and become involved
in reading to your children.

You might think that with all the great work out club does, our members
have enough on their plate -
but when a cause makes a
call, we are there to respond.
As a result of the recent bushfires,
have set up a response via a new group,
. Our Club Service Director, Peter, has stepped up as Chair
and Youth Director, Trish, is giving a hand with Communications;
whilst Nick will work on a model that can be reused and quickly implemented
in
the event of future disasters.
Great work Team Karrinyup!

. A very interesting talk!

on Wednesday 17 February 2021
. From left to right we have Vicki, Jim, President Linda, Heather,
Sue, President Ralph, Myrtle and
Joe.
A big thank you to Don for arranging the evening again
and to Lucy for the salads.
And another thank you to the Bowls Club of East Fremantle for hosting us.
We were trying to work out how long this evening
has been a fixture in our Calendar.
Don has organised it for at least 13 years and apparently
Peter Cockcroft was in charge before that so we think probably 20 years at least.
It is a lovely tradition.
