On Thursday 25th
March, WA Prevention and Recovery Initiatives celebrated by Injury Matters
recognised the top injury prevention and recovery support initiatives from
across Western Australia at an Injury Prevention and Safety Awards breakfast
held at the Duxton Hotel, Perth
Rotary WA Districts 9455 &
9465 were highly commended for their Rotary WA Driver Education Program in category "Outstanding Achievement in Collaboration for a Safer
WA”
Award winners included Royal
Life Saving Society WA, Royal Perth Hospital, the City of Kwinana, South
Metropolitan Health Service, South West Aboriginal Medical Service, Holyoake
Wheatbelt Community Alcohol and Drug Service, Black Swan Health and the Collaboration
for Evidence, Research, and Impact in Public Health team at Curtin University.
Held biennially, the Awards
recognise individuals and organisations who are having a positive impact on the
community by conducting activities that aim to prevent and reduce the impact of
injury within Western Australia.
The event was opened by
Professor Fiona Wood AM of the Fiona Wood Foundation. Injury Matters Chief
Executive, Sandy Lukjanowski said, “The awards attracted a high calibre of
nominations this year, demonstrating both the diverse range of injury issues
and innovative activities being conducted in WA to prevent and reduce the
impact of injury,” “Effective injury prevention and safety promotion
initiatives are essential for improving the overall health and wellbeing of
Western Australians; however, these efforts can often go unrecognised. It is a
pleasure for Injury Matters to be able to bring together some of the key
agencies to recognise and honour their initiatives making a difference in WA at
today’s awards ceremony, particularly after a tough 12 months. It is important
to reflect and celebrate what the sector has achieved
“Receiving
this recognition is very exciting and a credit to so many who have provided
ongoing support since our first program” said Rotary WA Coordinator Lindsey
Francis. We congratulate all in attendance as they like us are working hard to
prevent injury and to saving lives.
For
Rotary this is a tribute to our many Stakeholders, Community and Schools plus Rotarians
in Metropolitan and Regional (Geraldton, Northam and Pinjarra) who have
tirelessly worked with Rotary clubs over many years to establish a successful
program in their efforts to save young lives.
The program run with WA Rotary
and partners WA Police and St John Ambulance, involves Year 10 -11 students
before they get their drivers licenses, educating them on road safety including
the law and road rules, risks, inattention and driving hazards in a bid to
reduce the number of road fatalities and serious injuries to young drivers.
“For
Rotary, running RWADE is crucial, we want to raise awareness well in advance
for our young people, before they get behind the wheel of a car or motorbike. We want them to remember and to recall the
many areas of safety and care for others, before they become drivers or
passengers.
Road
statistics have become a huge concern, there are too many accidents and we need
to work at stopping the loss of life NOW! We need to ensure that young drivers grow up
to become adults, and not another road statistic.”
Obtaining a driver’s licence
is a dream for most young people, but learning the skills whilst driving on our
regional roads has for many come at a cost!
RWADE is all about education of young drivers before they get behind the
wheel of a car.
In
Geraldton the largest run program regionally, the program includes a Road Train
and Motor Bike to raise awareness of the safety aspects of these large vehicles
on our regional roads. A motor bike is placed
at the front of the truck to become invisible, once students climbed into the
cab they cannot see the Motor Bike, an eye opener for students involved.
The next
program in Geraldton will commence on Thursday 4th November 2021 at
Towns Football Club.

Perth & Heirisson Rotary will be serving breakfast to ex-Service Personnel
and their families in appreciation of the
sacrifice they have made for our country.
We need volunteers to help make our veterans feel
special that day.
Great if you're "Interested" or "Going".
Even better if you register as a volunteer to serve.

The Rotary Club of Rockingham’s annual Grant Night was a great success
with 11 local organisations being the beneficiaries.

Past District Governor Des Lawson and wife Rhonda
attended our meeting tonight.
What an inspirational couple they are and have achieved
so much through Rotary over the 40 years.
Des shared some fund-raising initiatives he has
been involved with over the years.
A couple that struck a cord with members was the
Kite Festival and the Golf Ball drop.
Tonight we heard from Rotary Club of Mandurah members
Barry & Martin about their successful Christmas Wishing Well
program.
They have raised an amazing amount of money with little effort
since the first year it began, in 2008.
50% of funds raised goes back into the local community
through applications from local not for profit groups.
Teamwork makes the Dream Work
Smiles all around as we
assisted
with their first fundraising opportunity for the year.
Kay and President were both down to assist the Rotaractors
at the Bullsbrook Country Fair
tasked with the parking .
There were thousands that attended the community event
but a joint effort made sure that
our part went smoothly.

Over the course of an Operation DRA receives support in many forms
from local businesses and members of the community. Geoff
Francis and his shop
have been providing DRA with ongoing support during
Operation Woods in the Perth Hills.
Ranging from discounted equipment to chainsaw maintenance lessons
and invitations
to dinner at the local Rotary Club to meet more of the people our teams
on the ground are there to assist.
Thank you Geoff for all your help keeping our members prepped
and for ensuring our
tools are safe, serviced and ready to use.

REQers helping Vinnies' State Distribution Centre located in Canning Vale
warehouse and distribution point for material donations
for Vinnies WA.
REQers carefully sorted clothes which are then sent out Vinnies shops
where the profit from the sale of all goods generate funds that go back to support
Vinnies programs and services in the Western Australian
community.
A big thank you to Rachel and Nadine for organising the day.
Thank you to all the REQ members and volunteers.
We welcome all at our
next event!
Our year 7-10 Golf Academy students had an awesome morning
playing in the Bridging The Gap event with the Seniors
Congratulations to Karissa Sanchez and Arnika Zuideveld who,
along with their senior team mates, captured the coveted BTG trophy!
Well done to Brodie Ridley and Kimberley Innes who finished in second place.
Thanks to Collier Park and the seniors for supporting this event,
which is so important to our school community
Teacher Samantha White with Shenton College students
sponsored by the
Nedlands Rotary Club for the Science Experience.
What do to on a Sunday?
Well we spent ours at Brigadoon, cooking lunch for BlazeAid volunteers
who are helping to restore properties, fencing
and much, much more after the recent fires.
Cooking lunch for 90+ is no mean feat but when you put
a bunch of Rotarians together it's
easy-peasy!
We had a great day, made some new friends and collectively did our bit
to ease the day for some fabulous, hard-working and
well-deserving people.
for sponsoring our BBQ fundraiser for ROC's Youth Projects.
It was a great day to be out in the sun raising funds to support students
at Kiara College including scholarships to assist in providing books and uniforms,
driver education day and leadership programs
A huge shoutout to our ROC Members and friends who kindly offered
your time to sizzle with us over the weekend
Visit to Westcorp to learn about sandalwood.
Thanks Peter for a most interesting and informative talk.
