While tremendous progress has been made in the fight against polio,
wild poliovirus remains endemic to two countries
and the threat of cVDPV outbreaks continues to loom.

World Polio Day is celebrated every year on 24 October.
It was initiated by Rotary International over a decade ago
to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk,
who developed a vaccine against poliomyelitis.
World Polio Day 2021
Theme is : “One Day. One Focus: Ending Polio –
delivering on our promise of a polio-free world!
” Use of inactivated poliovirus vaccine and live oral poliovirus vaccine
led to the establishment of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988.
It is a public-private partnership includes Rotary, the World Health Organisation (WHO),
the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF,
the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and governments of the countries.
About Polio Poliomyelitis (polio)
is a highly infectious viral disease, which mainly affects young children
(under five years of age).
The virus is transmitted by person-to-person spread mainly
through the faecal-oral route or, less frequently, by a common vehicle
(e.g. contaminated water or food) and multiplies in the intestine,
from where it can enter the nervous system and can cause paralysis
. Symptoms Initial symptoms are fever, fatigue, headache,
vomiting, stiffness of the neck and pain in the limbs.
1 in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis (usually in the legs)
. Among those paralyzed, 5% to 10% die when their breathing muscles
become nonfunctional.
Prevention
There is no cure, but safe and effective vaccines are there.
Polio can be prevented through immunization. Polio vaccine
is given multiple times, almost always protects a child for life.
The strategy to eradicate polio is therefore based on preventing infection
by immunizing every child until transmission stops and the world is polio-free.
There are two types of vaccine to prevention infection.
OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine)
: It is given orally as a birth dose for institutional deliveries,
then primary three doses at 6, 10 & 14 weeks
and one booster dose at 16-24 months of age.
Injectable Polio Vaccine (IPV):
Two fractional doses are given at 6 and 14 weeks of age by Intradermal route
on the right upper arm.
Joint statement by WHO-UNICEF-ROTARY on World Polio Day
Today as the world commemorates World Polio Day with the theme,
“One Day. One Focus: Ending Polio –
delivering on our promise of a polio-free world!”
, and Ethiopia launches a nationwide polio vaccination (nOPV2) campaign,
we – the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and ROTARY
– reaffirm our commitment to continue delivering on our promise
of a poliofree world for current and future generations.
In 1988, the world committed to eradicate wild polio virus,
and today, five out of six WHO regions are certified free of wild polio virus,
with wild polio virus reported only from two endemic countries,
Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
Two cases of wild polio virus type 1 were reported globally
as of mid-October 2021 compared with 125 for the same period in 2020
. On 25 August 2020,
the independent Africa Regional Certification Commission (ARCC)
for Polio Eradication officially declared that the WHO African Region
that constitutes 47 member states is free of wild poliovirus (WPV).
Though 99.9 per cent of polio has been wiped out with the oral polio vaccine,
in rare cases when not enough children are reached,
other forms of the virus continue to circulate.
To overcome this, today Ethiopia launches a nationwide polio vaccination campaign
with the nOPV2 vaccine targeting over 17 million under-five children
to help end the circulation of all forms of polio virus.
The campaign will be conducted in all regions of the country on 22-25 October 2021.
Vaccinators will move from house to house for this campaign,
and will also use temporary fixed sites in camps for internally displaced people (IDP camps)
and transit areas

On Saturday 6 November, we'll be practising ecosystem mental health care
by weeding the conservation area at Murdoch University Perth
in partnership with Murdoch Environmental Restoration Group.
Pulling out the invasive weeds which threaten our
native flora can be a very therapeutic exercise,
and some even use it as metaphorical experience
for
casting away intrusive thoughts.
The event is split into 2 shifts, 9am to 12pm,
break for BBQ lunch courtesy of Murdoch,
then 1pm to 4pm.
You can attend both shifts if you choose.
Also in light of Mental Health Awareness Month
at lunchtime there'll be an activity
to paint and decorate mini blue trees which you can take home
to raise
awareness of and preventing suicide.

Ed la Vertu was running a Retail Hardware Store in Bayswater
in 1994 when David first met him when he became interested in joining Rotary.
Ed was inducted into the Bassendean Rotary Club on 20th September 1994, and
soon became a keen Rotarian, achieving 100% attendance at meetings in his first
two years. He undertook his first Directorship role in the Club in 1995-96, as
Youth Director. This was followed by taking on the role of President in
1997-98, then International Director for two years, followed by the role of
Club Service Director in 2000-2001. 2001 -02 saw Ed step back into the Role of
President of the Club for the second time. Throughout his journey at
Bassendean, Nola was always there as a fully supportive partner. In 2006, the
ongoing activities of Bassendean Rotary Club became no longer viable, so the
remaining members voted to hand in the Club Charter. At the time, some
rejuvenation of Swan Valley Rotary Club was being facilitated, with a strong
membership drive, and Past District Governor Ed Reed approached some of the
Bassendean members and as a result David, Ed, Pieter and Susette Bakker, Jimmy
MacLean joined Swan Valley. With a new Rotary focus, Ed continued as an active
Rotarian, in particular managing attendance, as well as being a very active
Marshalling Person at Bassendean Markets, virtually continuously over the past
ten years.
We wish Ed and Nola all the best in Rotary retirement, and
accordingly, David asked President Manny to come forward as we present Ed with
an Award recognising his 27 years contribution to the Rotary Community. On
behalf of the Swan Rotary Manny presented to Ed a Service Award recognising his
many years of dedication to Rotary. Ed thanked the club for the presentation
and to David for his kind words. He then reflected on some of the many projects
that he participated in while a Rotarian. One was when a local library full of
health books closed arranging for all these books to be packed up and shipped
through Darwin to the Philippines to be used in a remote training hospital.
They were also able to include an unused X ray machine
Shelter Box Bronze Champion Award for RC Freshwater Bay
for the Club's annual support of $1,000 for this excellent project.

Our major beneficiary this year is the Perth Children's Hospital
Goldfields Family Assistance Trust Fund, to the tune of
$25,000.
We are also running a raffle with Triple M Goldfields
that will contribute a further
$25,000.
That's $50,000 into the fund.
We were also very fortunate to receive a grant from the
Mining Legends fund through the Goldfield Esperance Community Trust,
thus grant was for $50,000.
That's a grand total of $100,000 going into our PCHGFATF
to help local families with travel, accommodation and icing expenses
when travelling away from home in the Goldfields for medical treatment
for
children under the age of 18.
A huge thanks to the GECT board, as well as Michael Worthington
and the Worthy Parts team for raising this money
and
making it available for opportunities like this.
Big thanks also must go to Katee Heke for sharing her story
about Bronson and the families journey and how the fund has helped them.
Katee joined us on air yesterday morning and again last night
and spoke
in front of over 120 people at our Launch Party.
By telling her story, Katee and her family are hoping that it helps
let other families know that this funding is available locally
though the Rotary Club of Boulder.

This morning I called into the Bring and Buy Maddington Markets,
which are organised every Sunday morning by the
Rotary Club of Southern Districts

(who I have known for over 20 years)

Interact Club is busy with several recycling initiatives in place.
Collection boxes for batteries and milk bottle lids are around the school
and
each class has a box to recycle paper.
The 35,000 ring pulls collected last term were given to Rotary
who forwarded them onto the relevant charity to make
prosthetic limbs in the Third World.
Mr Findlater is operating the Containers for Cash initiative
which will provide
assistance for students.
Batteries, milk lids and applicable containers are welcomed
and can be sent in
with students

Antarctic Peninsula on a Russian Scientific Research Ship.
