Contributions to Rotary Foundation by clubs and individuals
help make funds available for clubs to draw on for an
amazing array of humanitarian projects.
Our club makes a significant contribution each year and some members
have signed up to be a “Centurion”, giving at least $100 per year.
Anyone who donates $1000 or more to Foundation
can receive a special Paul Harris Fellow (PHF)
recognition and further such contributions can add up to more PHF pins
with an increasing number of “blue stones” embedded.
Last week it was my pleasure to present (on behalf of Rotary Foundation)
Past District Governor Phillip Skelton with a PHF pin embedded
with 5 “blue stones”, in recognition of his accumulated giving
to this very worthy cause.
Australian Rotary Health (ARH) is undertaking a new initiative
to improve the mental health of our youngest Australians,
announcing that their research funding will now focus on the 0-12 age group.
The new research area will be introduced at a symposium titled
, ‘Healthy Children, Bright Futures: Improving the Mental Health of 0–12-Year-Olds’.
The symposium will take place in Sydney in late March next year.
Australian Rotary Health Chair Kevin Shadbolt OAM said the symposium
will bring together eminent researchers from around Australia
working in the field of children’s mental health.
“This will provide a forum for researchers to advise ARH on ways of
improving the mental health of Australian children.
So, this is an interesting project that I think we will all gain a great deal from,”
Mr Shadbolt said.
Following the symposium, ARH will open applications for Australian researchers
to apply for research funding to increase knowledge in this important area.
Medical Adviser to the ARH Board of Directors Professor Michael Sawyer OAM
says there has been a strong focus on research and services aimed
at improving the mental health of adolescents and young adults in Australia.
However, less attention has been paid to the problems faced by 0–12-year-olds.
“This is a serious omission because each year approximately
14% of Australian children experience mental disorders (that is,
approximately 500,000 children in this age range suffer from a mental disorder).
Furthermore, mental disorders have a major adverse effect on
the well-being of children and their families,
and on the education outcomes of children.
There is also evidence that 50% of mental disorders across
all age groups have their onset by the age of 14 years
100% of donations made to Australian Rotary Health this October
will go towards children's mental health research.
