ShelterBox aid being loaded on Poland, bound for Lviv

Thanks to all those that have generously contributed to our Ukraine Appeal.

The UN has put the number of refugees fleeing

the country now at 5 million, with nearly 20 million more

 displaced within Ukraine.

The crisis in Ukraine brings the upcoming World Refugee Day

into sharp focus, especially for those in Europe,

where becoming a refugee is no longer an abstract concept.

Next week, we'll be launching our annual #OFFTHEGRID campaign,

where we encourage supporters to go without electricity

for 24hrs over the weekend preceding World Refugee Day

 on 20th June.

Keep an eye out for the launch email next week

and how you can become involved.

As we conduct post-deployment evaluations in Haiti

and the Philippines following disasters, conflict

and the resulting displacement is keeping us busy

elsewhere in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Mozambique,

Nigeria, Syria, and Yemen.

At our recent 48th birthday dinner meeting, the Rotary Club of Karrinyup

was delighted to induct new member John Maker,

seen here with Induction Officer Stuart Stone and

Membership Director Mick Rogers.

John, whose classification is IT Consulting, is well known

to a number of our members, who have contacted him

when they have computer issues.

John worked for Channel 7 in the engineering section from 1977 to 1999.

He was in Outside Broadcasting covering any telecast from outside

of the Tuart Hill TV station and became supervisor of that section.

Part of his duties was to ensure that the quality of the transmission

of local programmes was up to high technical standards.

He was also a Technical Director of the News and other programmes

 originating from the studios.

He worked on such programs as Heineken Golf, AFL, WAFL,

Football (ie. soccer), Touring Car Championships

and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

John has been visiting our club in recent weeks

and expressed a desire to join our happy team.

We are delighted to have John on board.

Morley Rotarians, David’s family and guests celebrated

Past President and Paul Harris Fellow David Dartnall’s 50th anniversary

as a member of The Rotary Club of Morley.

A BBQ evening was held at his daughter’s residence

on Saturday evening 23rd April 2022.

David was Club President 1977-78 and PHF recipient 1990.

He has carried out most Director roles within the Club

and more particularly he has been Club Secretary for 13 separate years.

Prior to joining Rotary in 1972, David was a member of Apex.

These years in Apex together with 50 years in Rotary exemplifies

his dedication and commitment to “Service above Self”.

He was also a member of the Mount Lawley Golf Club

for over 60 years being Captain 1976

and President of the Golf Club in 1982.

In recognition of reaching this major 50 year milestone,

Club President Neil Chivers presented David

with a Paul Harris Sapphire recognition for the many years of service

to our Club and Rotary in general.

Rotarians, family and friends stood, raised glasses

and toasted David’s tremendous achievement followed by singing

“for he’s a jolly good fellow”

It was a wonderful celebration on a still and balmy night.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

By the time the briefing started,

there wasn't much more to say!

Along with many others and some ZOOM attendees,

the District's Foundation team presented the opportunities

A great leadership team, there to lend a hand and make

 the journey a bit easier.

The Rotary Club of Karrinyup Nurse of the Year Award was created in 1990

to honour outstanding nurses working at the Osborne Park Hospital.

This annual perpetual Award recognises a nurse (or midwife)

whose daily dedication and care epitomises the highest standard

 of quality and personal commitment.

Osborne Park Hospital has several wards catering for surgical,

rehabilitation, midwifery and aged care and there

are approximately 270 nurses and midwives working at the hospital.

Nominations for the Award may be made by nurses, patients, doctors

and hospital management staff.

Selection criterion is as follows:

·         Excellence in Clinical Practice

·         Empathy with Patients and Relatives

·         Promotion of the Profession

·         Ability to Work in a Collegiate Relationship with Health Care Team.

This Award, which is displayed proudly on the wall at Osborne Park Hospital

, is highly regarded by the staff and promoted extensively by the Hospital.

This year's winner Keren Smith is the 34th recipient.

Keren is a Manager in Patient Flow and is well known and respected

across OPH and SCGH. She is outstanding in her clinical practice

and her interpersonal skills and her nominations support this,

commending her for suitability for the Nurse of the Year Award.

The RC Karrinyup members offer our sincere congratulations

to our 2022 Osborne Park Hospital Nurse of the Year – Keren Smith.

Dr. Michael Chin, a long serving General Practitioner in the Karrinyup area,

was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Karrinyup

serving the Club in various roles and was the first member of our Club

to be named a Paul Harris Fellow.

 He passed away in 1998.

The Michael Chin Humanitarian Award was created in 2000,

in his name, to honour outstanding individuals,

who serve the community and those in need,

for their humanitarian and volunteer activities.

Recipients are those whose daily dedication epitomises

the highest standard of quality and personal commitment.

Marilyn Salley is a volunteer with Solaris Cancer Care

and was nominated by Solaris Client Services Manager, Aimee Riddell

. Aimee states that Marilyn is an integral member of the Solaris team,

where she works tirelessly as the Op Shop Manager.

Through Marilyn’s efforts over the last five years,

the shop has raised over $250,000 for Solaris,

an amazing achievement during the two years of COVID lockdowns

with a reduction in the number of shoppers during lockdowns.

Marilyn's dedication to cancer support and helping others

see her go over and above what could be expected of her.

She has created a warm and nurturing environment

and has developed a wonderful environment for her team of volunteers.

Her contribution to the Solaris Centre is enormous

and through her efforts and hard work she has helped to support

thousands of West Australians, whose lives have been impacted by cancer.

Dr Michael Chin's son Peter Chin, presented the award

at the recent Rotary 48th birthday dinner.

The Rotary Club of Karrinyup is delighted to recognise Marilyn

as a most worthy recipient of the 2022 Michael Chin Humanitarian Award

Rotary Club of Kununurra Inc.

We were approached by one of our own members late last year

about a wonderful device that she’d had trialling

at the Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Service - OVAHS earlier in the year,

and if Rotary might be able to assist with the acquisition of a SmileyScope.

Smileyscope is a high tech, medical grade, virtual reality (VR) device

designed to help health care professionals to deliver vital medications

to patients who may be a little fearful of needles or procedures.

The examples Ruth gave to us were heart patient kids who needed regular

and lengthy treatments that aren’t always comfortable for the young patients.

Smileyscope calls this digital therapeutics – virtual reality neuromodulation

. According to their website - Smileyscope's innovative

therapeutic platform underwent rigorous clinical studies,

and has changed pediatric needle practice worldwide.

It has a wide range of applications for a variety

of potentially painful treatments or fearful patients …

Virtual reality neuromodulation is now improving outcomes

from burns dressings to medical imaging.

We were delighted to have a little play with the Smileyscope

before handing it over to OVAHS CEO, Sharon Benning

and her team this week.

We're all looking forward to hearing all about the difference

this device is making to their patients and their treatments!!

Thanks to our community for the support.

It’s been a busy day for the club!

This afternoon the Esperance Golf Club hosted the Kevin Sharpe

memorial round which included our famous fish and chips for dinner

. Kevin was a long standing member of our club

and each year we host this in memory of him.

The green fees for today's event were donated back to our club

and as Don Patterson said “majority of the funds raised

 by Rotary in Esperance

stay in Esperance to support the community.”

To launch our Give a Damn Give a Can we had our

Be Our Guest lunch with Minister Simone McGurk in attendance.

Bob, Kim and Jinny handed out fish and chips plus cakes

for dessert to around 25 clients at St Pats

and we had a chance to have a chat with some of them.

We were welcomed by St Pats CEO Michael Piu

and St Pats COO Traci Cascioli.

. We had a lovely time and it went very well.

Congratulations to Bob for all his hard work.

Let's hope we can have this as an annual event.
