With World Refugee Day fast approaching, this month's newsletter
focuses on those fleeing conflict around the globe.
From Ukraine to Yemen to Nigeria and beyond,
refugees and the internally displaced,
people are forced to flee their homes,
often with just the clothes on their backs.
That is why I signed up for our #OFFTHEGRID campaign this year.
I'll be going without electricity for 24hrs and sleeping out
in our car port to get an insight into what it's like to be displaced.
You and your friends might like to join
me...... virtually!
As we approach the end of the financial year,
I'd like to thank you for your ongoing support.
The fundraising environment has been challenging
and looks to remain so for the foreseeable future
, but thanks to supporters like you,
we are able to help shelter people like Olga, Eshraq
and Supono and their families.
Olga outside her home in Ukraine.
Ukraine - Conflict
Olga (pictured above) recently collected aid items from our partner,
Relief Aid as part of Project 2.
The items included a shelter kit with tools and rope,
high- thermal blankets, hygiene kits (including items like soap,
washing powder and toothpaste), solar lights, buckets, and water carriers.
These items will help Olga with her recovery after her home
was severely damaged by shelling.
Distributions continue, with 1,127 shelter and household
item kits now having been distributed in the Bucha, Irpin
and wider Kyiv Oblast regions.
People in Need continue distributions as part of Project 1,
with a further 600 mattresses distributed to collective centres
in Zhytomyr Oblast (West of Kyiv), bringing the current total to 2,602.
For Project 3, our partner, ACTED have registered a total of 467
beneficiaries for multi-purpose cash assistance
across Ocnita, Hincesti and
Laloveni regions of Moldova.

Yemen - Conflict
Eshraq lives in the Marib region of Yemen with her family of five.
Eshraq and her family are not only vulnerable
to the ongoing conflict in Yemen,
but also fear risks of flooding and disease.
Supono with her two sons
Nigeria - Conflict
59-year-old Supono was forced to flee her home along with her
seven children when their village was attacked
by nomadic herdsman in Nigeria.
Like thousands of others, the family is now living in a camp
for displaced people.
Across the north of the country, many people live
in constant fear of horrific attacks led by non-state armed groups
. As well as this, static farmers are being attacked by
nomadic herdsman in search of sustainable land for farming and water.
A result of the changing climate drying up the land.

The community was invited to journey through Kaarta Koomba
(Kings Park) on June 3 for the Walk for Reconciliation,
the final event of National Reconciliation Week
. Live acoustic music carried walkers through to meeting places
dotted along the walk, featuring truth telling sessions,
opportunities for reflection, and cultural experiences.
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians
to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements,
and to explore how each of us can contribute
to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
The dates for NRW are the same each
year; 27 May to 3 June.
A number of Rotary members assisted with the event
and enjoyed the opportunity to both contribute
to the success of the event while learning more
about our shared histories, cultures and
achievements.
Another amazing night working with our street
family!
It’s always so lovely to be able to provide delicious hot food in abundance,
some TLC, laughs and love.
Our street friends are often the last to get a cuddle,
so we are always more than happy to give
them out in abundance!
With over 200 hungry tummies filled tonight,
I am
often saddened with all the new faces who turn up…
Massive thanks to Lindsey Francis who organised the abundance
of yumbo food from a multitude of sources including
Mens Shed
Claremont Showgrounds, Jackie who cooked and helped,
Jill,Judy, Jane, Katrina and Ruth
Huge thanks also to Evie Heel, Julie Dark, Jenni Jordan
and the indomitable Nikki Stanley, Rachael MacLean-Bell,
Alexandria MacLean-Bell who served up the plentifulness
of food with smiles and laughs.
It was also a joy to work alongside our friends from Street Doctor
with Tania McGuffie, Orange Sky with Lisa Sprlyan,
Shower Bus with Jim Mellor and Perth Homeless Support Group
with Jed Fay and Aaron Mcgregor.
Our friends from Perth Street Chaplains with
Dee Stepanoski and Glenn Phillipson
were braving the cold tonight to go out onto the streets
where people hide and provide some TLC.
We Care about Tuesday night's food service.
Well
done to members who assisted.

We had a packed house gathered for our John
Worsfold Modern Day Masculinity event.
We wanted to say a huge thanks to everyone that attended
and hope it was an enjoyable night.
Also thank you to Peta Slocombe and Gareth Shanthikumar
for joining John in a panel discussion about modern day masculinity,
breaking down the stereotypes and how we as a society can promote
it in a positive manner.
90% of the event proceeds will be donated to MAN UP
who provide workshops and education to engage and empower young men.
Their aim is to change the phrase 'MAN UP' to mean something positive;
to live authentically from one’s heart, embrace vulnerability,
and
hold one another accountable to stand up for what is right.
Rotary in the local South Perth & Victoria Park community,
collaborating and doing what we do best!
HavenWell is located in Vic Park, and is a haven for people
who have fallen on hard times.
They provide support and comfort without judgement,
by giving a helping hand to those in need.
They urgently needed to upgrade their large fridge to store all the food donated
which they use to prepare meals for the homeless.
Funding fell over at the last minute, so local Rotary Clubs,
Vic Park, South Perth-Burswood, Mill Point, Como & Ascot
quickly got together and partnered
in the funding required to allow the fridge purchase to be completed.

This week we welcomed back Glenys McDonald,
who has visited our club many times.
Glenys, a past president and honorary member of the RC South Bunbury,
is a long time friend of Secretary Carolyn and regular visitor,
whenever she is Perth.
Glenys was the representative of the Finding Sydney Foundation,
on board the Geosounder,
when the wrecks of Kormoran and Sydney were found in 2008.
She has written several books and has presented to the club
on a number of occasions.
She is seen here enjoying a drink with Treasurer Klaus.
