Jacaranda Festival 2015
Rotary Club of Applecross

The warm weather didn't keep crowds away from the popular Jacaranda Festival
at the weekend with the vibrant purple trees providing welcome shade
and a burst of colour along Ardross Street.
The Rotary Club of Applecross presented the 15th annual Festival
with more than 130 stalls, two stages with live entertainment
 and roaming street entertainment
. Acts by local schools Applecross Primary, Applecross High School
and Melville Primary drew large crowds,
as did Festival regulars 2 Cent Professionals, Uptempo and South Side Symphony Orchestra.
Cuisine was definitely a feature of this year’s event
with culinary delights from around the world
. Mayor Russell Aubrey and Member for Alfred Cove Dean Nalder
officially opened the event and joined in the Festival fun
. All funds raised will support local community groups including Esther Foundation
and Waylen Bay Sea Scouts.

A concert in Australia’s Perth on November 17
raised money to fund efforts to stop children from drowning in Vietnam.

The Vietnam Consulate in Perth brought handicrafts to the show,
which it organised with the Rotary Club of Hillarys.

According to the head of the club, Graham Kent,
disadvantaged Vietnamese children who live near water
 are particularly prone to drowning,
as they cannot afford to learn proper swimming techniques.

Thus, all funds raised will be used to send two Australian
swimming teachers to Vietnam, providing lessons
for their peers at Swim Vietnam.

Swim Vietnam is a charity based in central Vietnam
that gives free swimming and water safety lessons to children,
and trains local adults as swimming teachers.

It was the third event the Rotary Club of Hillarys
hosted to support the Vietnamese charity.-

The Art of the Gag

A Very Touching Story, Spain

This is the story of Justino,
a night security guard at a mannequin factory in Spain
. Because of his late night work he was mostly alone all the time
and Justino never really got to see his day coworkers,
but he would try to communicate with his fellow employees
by cheering them up using the mannequins at the factory.
