NIGERIA THREE YEARS FREE FROM WILD POLIOVIRUS

A milestone in an ongoing journey

 to achieve global polio eradication

21 August  2019 marks three years since Nigeria

 last reported a case of wild poliovirus. 

This is an important public health milestone

 for the country and the entire Africa Region, 

which is now a step now closer to polio-free certification.

At the press conference in Abuja,

 the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care

 Development Agency (NPHCDA),

 Dr Faisal Shuaib, acknowledged that the

 three-year mark is an important moment in the fight

 against polio but also emphasized the need for vigilance

  ̶ “one which we must delicately manage with cautious euphoria.”

“This achievement would certainly not have been 

possible without the novel strategies adopted in the 

consistent fight against polio and other vaccine preventable diseases.

 We commend the strong domestic and global financing

 and the commitment of government at all levels,”

 the Executive Director stated.

Innovation, partnership and resolve have all 

underpinned advancements made in Nigeria,

 together with the commitment of tens of thousands

 of health workers.

 “Since the last outbreak of wild polio in 2016 

in the northeast, Nigeria has strengthened supplementary 

immunization activities and routine immunization,

 implemented innovative strategies to vaccinate 

hard-to-reach children and improved acute flaccid paralysis (AFP)

 and environmental surveillance. 

These efforts are all highly commendable,”

 said WHO’s Officer in Charge for Nigeria, Dr Peter Clement.

However, despite progress, 

there is still much left to be done. 

Continued work to reach every last child

 with the polio vaccine,

 as well as strengthening surveillance and

 routine immunization across the region,

 will be key to keeping wild polio at bay

 and protecting the gains achieved.

Should there be no more cases in Nigeria

 or from countries in the Africa Region,

 and surveillance data submitted by countries meets

 evaluation criteria, the Africa Regional Certification Committee 

(ARCC) could certify the Region as wild polio-free 

as early as mid-2020.

The press briefing was attended by country representatives

 of all GPEI partners: WHO, UNICEF, CDC,

 Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation;

 as well as USAID, Government of Germany,

 EU and Canada.

 The Emir of Jiwa, representing the 

Northern Traditional Leaders Committee

 was also in attendance.

Hello Rotary,

My name is Marta Marioni, 

I came to district 9455 on exchange from 

Italy, Lake Como in 2015-2016 

and I was hosted by the Geraldton Rotary Club. 

I fell in love with Australia during my stay and

 I decided to come back to study here again.

Now, I am currently studying Architecture at Curtin University 

and I'll be staying in Perth for a semester. 

I live in a pretty, little unit in Riverton/Shelley

 with my bestfriend from Geraldton Samantha,

 who was also an exchange student.

While I'm here I was hoping to find a job and was wondering

 if anyone from the Rotary community knows anyone

 or anywhere hiring, preferably in the Riverton area,

 as I have to catch public transport to get there.

I am only staying here for 5 months but I would be happy

 and willing to work in any position. 

I am happy to do babysitting as I love kids

 and am also a native Italian speaker

 and would love to help out those willing to learn

 to increase their knowledge in this roman language.

 I haven't had much work experience back home 

but I consider myself a fast learner and am willing

 to gain as much knowledge and experience as I can.

I would love it if you could share my email throughout

 the other Rotary clubs to spread the word.

Rotary Club reaches half-tonne

Rotary Club of Cockburn members celebrating their 50th anniversary.

THE Rotary Club of Cockburn has notched

 up half a century of community contributions.

The club celebrated its 50th anniversary

 and recognised their years of dedication

 to improving the local area with a recent member’s dinner.

Long-time Rotarian and former president Peter Hodgson 

said the club estimated they had spent more 

than $1 million within Cockburn over the past 50 years.

 Rotary Club of Northbridge International Director, Joy Northover, 

presents June Wade with a cheque for $2,000

 to help with Shelterbox’s disaster relief work.

$2,000 Aid for Shelter

The Rotary Club of Northbridge has made another donation

 to Shelterbox, an international disaster relief organisation

 supported by Rotary clubs around the world.

June Wade, Coordinator for Shelterbox, told this week’s club meeting

 of the recent changes the organisation has made to adapt

 to the needs of disaster victims in different countries.

 In addition to the traditional $1,000 Shelterbox containing a tent,

 cooking equipment, blankets etc.,

 they now also offer a Shelterkit containing a tarpaulin, saw, hammer, shovel

 and other tools to help repair homes damaged by natural disasters.

They can also provide a kit with blackboard paint, chalk, pencils

 and paper to help school teachers re-establish lessons after a disaster.

This week, Shelterbox HQ in Cornwall, U.K. is monitoring 

the effects of floods in Bangladesh and landslides in India 

in anticipation that assistance may be required.

 They work closely with weather authorities to ensure help arrives when needed.

to find our about Saturdays Distribution Day.

First Aid certificates to ensure patrons of the

 Rockingham Rotary Sunday Market 

will be attended to if there is an incident.

Sue McCabe whom the our supported a couple of years back 

with thermoregulatory blankets etc. for children 

who she was working with for her PhD 

which has now been submitted.
Sue's work on sleep / conditions etc. has evolved over the past two years,

 although there is still much to be investigated as the questions

 to her at the meeting suggested.
Always excellent to hear back on medical matters

 the Club has had some involvement with.

Professor Jean-Pierre Macquart gave an outline of the discovery

 of Fast Radio Bursts and their significance

 in understanding space and its effect on us.

One of our everyday heroes is Hayley Lethlean our Membership Director

 and Board member.

 Hayley is a valued and active member of our club and works hard

 to help us achieve our club goals.

This week we held our very busy first Club Assembly of the Rotary Year,

 which centred on key focus areas of the 2019 - 2020 Operational Plan

. This was distributed a few weeks ago, giving members an opportunity

 to become familiar with it. 

Directors and team leaders spoke to their various portfolios

 giving members a clear picture of what we have done,

 what we are doing and what we will do.
