Half of Ghana’s population lives in
rural areas,
and only two-thirds can obtain safe drinking water
— after traveling 30 minutes round trip.
Since 2009, Rotary has worked with USAID Global Health
on a $18 million partnership to create access
to clean water and improve sanitation.
The projects the 30 Rotary clubs implemented,
along with their USAID partners,
have benefited more than 160,000 people

Update 23rd March 2020
Committee
Update 23rd March 2020
1. The DGN group recommend that our Australian Youth Exchange
program for the Inbound and Outbound groups for 2020-21
be suspended for 12 months, effective immediately.
This means that the DGN cohort cannot recommend
or support the notion of Incoming students mid 2020;
the promotion of local advertising for our students
to apply and be interviewed by Clubs for the 2021-22 year;
or commencing as Outbound students within the
Youth Exchange Program in January 2021

2. Essentially at this stage we would support in principle
Inbound student arrival mid- 2021
, and Australian Outbound students January 2022
(proviso of current government restrictions on
quarantine, travel and border shutdown being lifted)

3. There seems conflicting advice from YEP District Chairs
at present in regard to the management
of current Inbound and Outbound students,
primarily due to no global directive from RI
on managing YEP students during this pandemic,
nor an agreed Australian or Zone 8 consensus
for District management of this problem.
Hence, the variability is leading to some intense debate
and perhaps unsafe practice with returning students globally
in very uncertain times.
We believe that the safety of all YEP students is paramount,
regardless of financial implications,
so a united approach is sought via direction
from current DGs and DGsE (G-trains)
to ensure appropriate decisions are promoted and made.
Clear direction from RI is needed and should
be sought from RI Parramatta as a matter of urgency

4. As borders are closing and capacity to return students
is diminished for a variety of reasons
including flight cancelling or redirection,
it is incumbent on our Rotary community to do everything
in our power to promote and ensure the safety
of our present students.
This is a domestic and international issue,
insofar as appropriate discussion with our counterparts
and Chairs in Districts with which we exchange
should have the same focus on protecting the wellbeing of our students.
Given the age group, lack of language skills,
medical compromise with travel, lack of experience
and decision-making skills amongst our student population
it would be helpful for the G-Train to support their Chairs
in making our priorities well understood
to our exchange partners.
The time is well past for sending students home
(both inbound and outbound).
We should all be supporting students,
clubs and exchange families in situ.

5. We seek your support and endorsement via
circulation of this information to your District Governor cohorts,
eliciting their feedback and commitment to support
these recommendations.
We recognise that each District is autonomous
in these decisions,
however there is an opportunity here to perhaps centralise
some of these principles in action

Penningrose is
a smiling two-year-old girl that the team
had the pleasure of meeting whilst in
PNG.
She had burns on both her feet and ankles and the team proceeded
by giving
her a skin graft assisted by the local staff.

Recently,
Interplast volunteers delivered surgical mentoring
and nurse education programs
in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea!
We have been delivering programs in PNG for

Chennai: India,
Rotary D3230 set a new world record in 2014
for the largest human flag, formed
by over 50,000 volunteers,
beating the previous record held by Pakistan.
The event saw about 1.5 lakh volunteers, mainly
youth,
turn up for the event at YMCA Grounds here even as 50,000
of them formed
the tricolour,
Governor of Rotary 3230, organiser of the 'My Flag My India'
campaign,
President Ross asked
Brian Eddy to formally induct
Susan
Marshall into membership of the Club.
The club hosted our first Zoom meeting of the year due to the current
meeting restrictions.
We
even inducted 2 new members. Welcome Scott and Ken.
We are looking at different ways we can continue to operate during this
time.
We would like to say a huge thank you
to everyone who contributed
to the success of our International Women’s Day
Luncheon.
Our amazing club members, speakers, sponsors,
those who donated their
time and raffle prizes
. Without the hard work and generosity of you all we would
not
have been able to give so generously to the
Empowering Chicks and The Lucy Saw women’s refuge.
We raised an amazing $4000.00
and
are very excited to donate $2000.00 to each of these great charities.
Hydrotherapy Patient Lifter for Pool at Pinjarra
Congratulations
to Mike Bermann, Rotarian from Rotary Club of Ascot
for seeing another
successful project through to fruition
for a Hydrotherapy Patient Lifer for
local Pool in Pinjarra
Mike
Bermann together with Michael and Robyn Metcalf, Peter Richardson,
along with
two members from the Pinjarra Rotary Club,
travelled down to the Pinjarra
Aquatic Pool Centre to launch
the equipment which was purchased in conjunction
with funds donated from the Rotary Club of Pinjarra.
The staff and management of the centre were over the moon together
including Mike Bermann’s friend Wayne Chambers,
who suffers Guillain Barre`
Syndrome (GBS)
and requires this equipment to enable him access in and out
of
the hydrotherapy pool.
The
Centre Manager, Ben Porter, said this would be utilised by many people
who
usually couldn’t visit the pool because lack of such equipment.
This patient
lifter will make a change for many.
In place of the social activity
originally planned,
10 people attended a casual meal at the UWA Club Cafe
on
Friday, 20th March
where we celebrated our member Ronniet Orlando's birthday.
Fellowship is a vital part of Rotary and we all enjoyed the evening.
