Rotary International is the world's first service
club organization,
with more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs
worldwide.
Rotary club members are volunteers who work locally, regionally,
and
internationally
to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide
education
and job training, promote peace,
and eradicate polio under the motto
Service Above Self.
The last major epidemic in living memory in
Australia was polio.
Many of us might remember friends from school or the neighbourhood
who fell
victim to this cruel and sometimes fatal virus
. Interestingly it bears some
similar characteristics to the present pandemic;
““Poliomyelitis is a sometimes
fatal disease caused by a virus that is spread
through faeces and mucous, and
ingested orally.
It is highly contagious, but in the majority of cases polio has either no
effect at all
or, at worst, no more than flu-like symptoms.
However, in about
one per cent of those infected the virus spreads
to the nervous system,
causing
paralysis, usually of the legs.
Of those affected in this way, five to 10 per
cent die.
As most people infected with polio have no signs of illness
, they remain
unaware they have been infected
. For several weeks they can be spreading the
virus.
During that time, polio can spread rapidly through a community
. The
disease may infect thousands of people, depending on the level of sanitation,
before the first case of polio paralysis emerges.
Mental Health Month in October will be here before
we know it!
It's time to start thinking of some COVID-safe ways
to get involved in Hat Day this year - supporting youth mental health research
is more important now than ever.
Get involved:
. In March 2020 Covid-19 hit the world,
WWBT, like
many other cycling and fundraising events,
canceled the 2020 event.
Recently a
$8,500 cheque was handed over to WA Police Legacy
from the fundraising of the
2019 event
. President Mick Powell (2nd Left) of the Rotary Club of Batavia
Coast
is seen here presenting a cheque to Superintendent Roger Beer (far
Right)
. They are assisted by a couple of the organisers of the WWBT
Nathan
Johansen and Tom Thuijs.
Thank you to the riders and the sponsors for this great
result.”

The Nedlands Claremont Lions and a significant
number
of members of the community
joined the RC Freshwater Bay's meeting on
19th August
for an outstanding presentation by Prof. Ralph Martins on
"Successfully combatting the Dementia Epidemic: The Way Forward".
Adding to the success of the meeting was the
announcement
that two of our 'Honorary' members
would now become 'Active'
members.
Journalist Lee Tate who has been a speaker at the
Club in the past attended.
As did a strong supporter of Ralph Martins work with
Alzheimer's,
Johnny Young, who readily agreed to be speaker and entertainer
for
Freshwater Bay's Birthday/Christmas function on 19th December.
After a
productive meeting in the Armadale Library
this evening, a bunch of us extended
fellowship
over a delightful meal at the Cantina and Grill.
Excellent cuisine,
friendly service and the cost extremely reasonable.
Rotarians have fun while
planning meaningful community engagement.
Congratulations to the Belmont Rotaractors
for an
excellent science week event at Oakwood Primary School
Thanks to everyone who enjoyed our Social evening at Happy Meals
in Victoria Park. Good food and good company
We recently had the pleasure of hosting guest
speaker Grace Buchanan
who came to speak to our Club about advanced care
planning.
Although these are hard conversations to have and
to hear,
we know that by sharing this essential information with our loved
ones,
we make it so much easier for them when times are tough.
It is important that your preferences are
understood to improve your end of life care
. It also goes a long way to reduce
stress and anxiety for your relatives
and those staff who will be taking care
of you.
Grace advised us on a few of the key documents that
you REALLY
need to have in place, including:
- an up to date will
- an enduring power of attorney
- an enduring power of guardianship
- an advanced health directive
- an advanced care plan
Thank you so much for coming to visit our Club
Grace
and for sharing this important information.
A look at living history.

1988 was a very good year.
Last weekend saw a total group of 27 members,
friends
and family head to Gingin
to enjoy the hospitality of RCGG member
Dan
& his wife Maria at their property,
Walkalina Park Olive Grove.
Activities
included drafting sheep, a tour of the Olive grove,
a 4WD visit to the new
property,
olive oil tasting, football, and music!
A fabulous weekend of
fellowship, fun and frivolity.
Huge thanks to Dan and Maria for their generous
hospitality
in hosting such a wonderful weekend.
this week we held our first Club Assembly of the
Rotary year,
where directors outlined their plans for each of our service
areas.
As they do every week our cheery team of Sam and Ross
greeted everyone
on arrival.
Well, today would have been Bali School Kids
Distribution Day
and one of the greatest day of the Rotary Club of Boulder
calendar.
$130AUD supports a student for a year providing
Uniforms and School equipment.
This is not just open to Rotarians, anyone can
sponsor.
More information can be found here
We are thinking of all of our friends and their
families in Bali
at the moment and can hopefully come and see you all soon.
Rotary Club of Boulder provide the Medication for
Villagers,
which is exactly as it sounds,
we provide much needed medication to
the kids
, parents and families in the villages,
which are quite remote in some
cases.
As we can not get there this year to support this
and there is no distribution day,
the club is instead investing in much needed
water fountains.
These Water Fountain cost $160AUD to install.
We are arranging
for 10 of these to be installed in much needed areas
including traditional
markets and areas of worship.
Our members are also personally sponsoring these
water fountains
as well as sending food parcels to the families of our sponsor
kids
during this time of need.
Hope to see you all sometime soon.
For more information, or to get involved, please

The annual Swan Rotary Small Mob Shearing
Day will be held
Saturday 5th September 2020 at the
Gidgegannup Showgrounds.
In addition to sheep, this year we will
also be offering shearing and treatment
for alpacas and ilamas
. Great value at just $10 for sheep,
$30 for Alpacas and $60 for ilamas.
So if you have one or just a few animals
and find it tricky to have a shearer
attend to your ‘small mob’ then
bring them along.
Animals must be in good health.
Bookings are essential so please call
Rachel on 0413 011 610
to get your nominated time slot.
We look forward to seeing you and your
fleecy friends!
