The news from Afghanistan is horrifying, as hour by hour
we see relative security and stability descend into chaos and fear.
People are fleeing across the country,
causing mass displacements within Afghanistan and across its borders.
Although Afghanistan is somewhere we’ve provided
emergency shelter several times,
we’re not currently able to respond to this devastating
crisis.
Right now, the security and political situation is incredibly complex,
changing by the minute,
while access for humanitarians and aid is already difficult
and becoming impossible. We need to ensure that our aid reaches vulnerable families and puts no one in further danger.
Even in the unlikely event that the Taliban are true to their word,
ISIS has already
shown their deadly intent.
We’re in contact with partners in the region and will continue
to watch the situation closely, to see if we’re able to help
displaced families recover
as the picture becomes clearer.

At the end of July, an intrepid group of ShelterBox supporters
set off on the glorious Larapinta Trail, in aid of ShelterBox.
Due to last-minute border closures,
six of our trekkers had to miss out this time and have been
offered places on future treks
(hint: there will be another Larapinta Trek in 2022 😊 )
. The group combined with a team from another charity
and together they formed close bonds and shared
the
sights and sounds of the Larapinta.

What a fantastic initiative in helping reduce
homeless in Perth.
Our club, along with other Rotary clubs, is proud to partner with My Home
in providing funds to fit-out homes with furniture, crockery cutlery,
bedding and other requirements.
The donations made through the Container Deposit Scheme
are used to help provide homes for the homeless.

On 27 August, Community Services Minister Simone McGurk announced
$2.2 million in Lotterywest funding for an innovative project that will
provide 18 prefabricated houses for women who are experiencing
homelessness.
The grant was presented to St Patrick's Community Support Centre
and My Home Australasia.
This partnership will provide housing on a vacant site in North Fremantle
for women over the age of 55 who are
experiencing homelessness.
My Home will construct 18 houses with prefabricated wall, roof
and floor panels delivered to and erected on the site,
ready for the
builder to fit out the houses.
St Patrick's will allocate the dwellings to clients, and facilitate the tenants' access
to support services to help them sustain their tenancies
and live as independently as possible in the community.
Tenants will pay rent, which will be calculated as
if they live in public housing.
The North Fremantle site is owned by the Public Transport Authority
and St Patrick's will have a peppercorn lease with the Department of Communities.
Minderoo Foundation is also providing funding for
the project.
My Home Australasia is a philanthropic development organisation
that takes an architectural approach to housing and land developments
to provide a high standard of accommodation for people who would
otherwise be homeless.

and we had a load of fun at
What an inspirational speaker Jade Lewis was at out meeting today.
Changing peoples lives and making a difference. She has written
“Golden Haze, Jade's Story" and "Under YOUR Influence"
. She also
has an audio series, "Your Past Does Not Have to Predict your
Future".
Jade now holds two diplomas in Community Service Development
and is a finalist in the Pride of Australia: Community Service Award 2010,
is a Paul Harris
Fellow and was a Finalist in the Telstra Young Business Woman of the Year 2009.
Jade visits schools and works with parents and the community to build awareness
and knowledge about drug addiction and creating goals
Ballajura Fair at Ballajura Community College
Baldivis Rotary was the host for the Combined Service Clubs dinner
. We had a wonderful night sharing with other local service groups including
the Baldivis CWA, Soroptimists of Rockingham, Lions clubs of Baldivis,
Port Kennedy, and Rockingham
as well as our own local Rotary Clubs of Palm Beach and Rockingham.
We also had a presentation from Jack Collier about his polio journey
and how he is dealing with Post-Polio Syndrome.
We are hoping this can be an annual event, connecting us with
like-minded
groups in our community
