The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI)
is closely monitoring developments in Afghanistan.
GPEI partners and staff are currently assessing
immediate disruptions to polio eradication efforts
and the delivery of other essential health services,
to ensure continuity of surveillance and
immunization activities while prioritizing the safety
and security of staff and frontline health workers in
the country.
The polio programme in Afghanistan has operated
for many years amid insecurity and conflict,
and will continue working with all actors, agencies
and organizations who enable delivery of immunization
as well as deliver humanitarian assistance to populations
in need across the country.
The GPEI remains steadfastly committed to protecting
all children from polio and supporting the provision
of other essential
immunizations and health services.
We strongly believe that the delivery of health care
– including polio vaccination –
is essential to prevent diseases and safeguard communities.
Together with our partners,
the people of Afghanistan, national and provincial authorities,
we will do everything in our
power to continue this critical work.
A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the west of Haiti
at 08.29 local time on Saturday 14 August.
The epicentre was some 150km from the densely populated
capital of
Port-au-Prince and was felt across the Caribbean.
Collapsed buildings and fatalities have been reported
, but the extent of the damage is still unknown.
Sadly, high casualties are probable and damage from
the disaster is
likely to be widespread.
Haiti is still recovering from the devastating earthquake in 2010
which caused extensive
damage to infrastructure and the economy.
We think there will be a significant need for emergency shelter,
and we are preparing to respond if needed.
Our teams are working hard to understand
the full extent of the damage.
This includes finding out what the communities in Haiti
will need to help them recover,
and whether a ShelterBox response is possible.
We’re currently working on plans for the logistical
and access challenges of working in an area
where buildings have been reduced to rubble.

One in 10 men in Australia lives with incontinence.
Affecting 1 in 6 men globally, prostate cancer is a common cause
– 99% of all men undergoing surgical treatment for prostate cancer
experience incontinence for some time.
For men using incontinence products,
there are few places to dispose of them outside of their own homes.
While bins for hygiene products are universal in women’s toilets,
few men’s toilets have bins.
As a result, men with incontinence are often reluctant to go out
and engage in everyday activities, and they may avoid socialising except
with close family and friends.
The Rotary Club of Perth City East is a key player in Bins4Blokes,
a national awareness campaign that encourages providers of toilets
in public places to install sanitary hygiene bins for men.
Providers include local governments, business owners,
shopping centres and sporting stadiums.
By increasing the availability of disposal bins throughout Australia,
Bins4Blokes is helping to reduce the social isolation
and mental health impacts experienced by men with incontinence.
The Bins4Blokes campaign was officially launched on Monday 21st June 2021
at the WACA ground by Acting WACA CEO Justin Michael,
Dr Jo Milios (Physiotherapist and City Rotary member),
Ian Mawson (Prostate Cancer survivor)
and Ken ‘Noddy’ McAullay (former AFL player/
WA Cricketer & Prostate Cancer survivor).
WACA CEO and City Rotary member, Christina Matthews,
led the way for WACA to become the first stadium in Australia
to install men’s hygiene bins.
Bins4Blokes is already making an impact across Australia,
with over 400 pledges of support and 22 registered supporters
on the Bins4Blokes website.
Please help by pledging your support for Bins4Blokes.
If you are a business owner or provider of toilets in a public
or shared space, you can help by installing a sanitary hygiene bin for men
. You can also support the campaign by raising awareness
of this unmet need within your community,
and by visiting www.bins4blokes.org.au t
o download resources and nominate sites where you
would like to see a bin installed.
You can also register as a bin provider on the same website
once you have a bin installed.

The Duck Derby
Heirisson Rotary Club have been running the Duck Derby for a number of years.
They have provided a lot of fun and raised considerable funds
for local charities through this event.
They have graciously asked RC of Mill Point to partner with them this year
to share the event and raise funds for Rotary
children's projects.
Come and have a quacking good time listening to what makes a good project

in a unique fundraiser and have
some fun along the way
