As we reach the end of the financial year,

I'd like to take the opportunity to thank all of you

that have supported us in the past 12 months

. We are well aware that these have been difficult times for some,

but any contribution, large or small makes a huge difference

to the lives of those affected by disaster and crisis.

I'd particularly like to thank those that went #OFFTHEGRID

for World Refugee Day, together you raised over $3,000!

Meanwhile, our Larapinta Trekkers are going great guns

, with just one month to go,

they have broken through the $30,000 mark.

Thanks to participants and donors alike.

                                                       In this month's newsletter,

we are going to look at the growing crisis

in the Tigrayan region of Ethiopia,

where the UN has recently declared a famine.

There is also news of a planned response in Mozambique

and a report from Burkina Faso,

as part of our response to the 'Forgotten Crisis' in the Lake Chad Basin.

Thanks for being part of the team.

The UN has declared a state of famine in Ethiopia.

As people have been displaced by the brutal conflict in Tigray,

farms have been left empty, crops unplanted.

On top of this, families are also facing

the constant threat of coronavirus

We have supported over 51,000  people  affected

by conflict  in Ethiopia since 2018.

Now Tigray, a region that was already in desperate

need of support, is facing a humanitarian catastrophe

. Working with our partner IOM, we’re supporting people

who’ve fled their homes within Tigray

with emergency shelter, household essentials and hygiene items.

We’re providing tarpaulins, rope, blankets, sleeping mats,

mosquito nets, water carriers, carry sacks and kitchen sets.

We’re also providing washbasins, soap, and water jugs,

to help prevent a devastating outbreak of coronavirus

The situation in Mozambique is complex.

The BBC reports, 'the region has long experienced instability,

but the insurgency involving Islamist militants began in 2017.

Local al-Shabab militia operating in the area are believed

to have links to the wider Islamic state group (IS)

. High levels of poverty and disputes over access to land

and jobs have contributed to local grievances.'

We have just been given the green light to move forward

with planning a response to displacement caused

by violent insurgency in the northern region of Mozambique.

Given the complexities of responding and importing into Mozambique,

we are scoping partners who will be able to support.

ShelterBox last responded in Mozambique in 2017 following Cyclobe Dineo.

Following the death in 2007 of our Charter President, Graham Fosbery

, the Board decreed that the Silver Gull Award

be renamed the Graham Fosbery President’s Award in his honour.

The Board felt that the work Graham did for others epitomized

the finest example of the Rotary motto

'Service above Self'.

In recent years, it has been presented by a member of the Fosbery family.

Klaus is  a member of the Stirling Farmers Market Management Committee

and, in addition, he has been integral in organising many of the

 social functions this Rotary year,

chasing up payments, tallying final numbers and ensuring members' menu choices.

His dedication to Rotary Club of Karrinyup is evident

in the many hours he spends to ensure the details are accurate

with everything that he does, resulting in good accounting and smooth event planning.

Klaus is awarded the Graham Fosbery President's Award

for his extraordinary support and exemplary Rotary service

to the Club during 2020-2021 Rotary year in organising

our many social functions, in addition to his already exacting role as Treasurer.

President Amir handed the Club Charter to Incoming
President Pettine-Ann.
New President Pettine-Ann gave a brief outline of future directions,
including continuation of current projects such as the
 Zambia Water Project.
Some people have given ideas for new projects
 to President Pettine-Ann already.
These suggestions and other ideas will be considered by the Board
when planning for the new year.

The meeting concluded with all singing the National Anthem.

Thank you to President Pettine-Ann for her work
in arranging and organising the Change Over event
and making it so successful.

At a recent Club meeting we were delighted to have guests

Mrs Amanda Robertson and Tristan Robertson.

Tristan recently attended Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN).

This is a program for youth leadership development for ages 14-17 years.

Tristan's attendance is an opportunity as being the current 2021 Awardee

for the Des Killick Foundation Student Scholarship, established

in partnership with Como Secondary College over the next 5 years

. A new Awardee is selected annually in December.

Tristan provided a presentation on his RYPEN

experience, which he enjoyed, and a general update on his current Year 12 studies.

We wish Tristan all the best for the remainder of Year 12,

and look forward to hearing from him at the end of the year.

We thank Amanda & Tristan for attending

Had a great meeting at the Byford DOME with the Rotary Club of Byford & Districts last night. The 2021 RYPEN Candidates were Stephanie Hendriksen and Elana Ng who with their families talked about their experiences to the Club. Both candidates presented Pres Denise with some flowers and wine in recognition for the Club's contributions. Thanks to Youth Director Sheila who lead the youth program for the Club.

Matt Pham from the Glades IGA and District 9455 presented the club with a cheque for $500.00 after we performed BBQ duties for the 30th anniversary of the Pham family in the grocery business.

Our guest speaker tonight was Troy,

who the club sponsored to attend a RYPEN camp.

Troy described some of the challenges they were given including

 the Zombie Apocalypse.

He indicated he made lots of new friends, it helped develop his self confidence,

and they all agreed to get back together when they could attend a RYLA camp.

We’re proud of you Matt and will be keeping you in our thoughts tonight.
We’ve just got word that Matt’s Vinnies CEO Sleepout
has now raised over $8,000 which will go towards those
who don’t have a safe place to call home.

Lots of warm winter socks for St. Patrick's Community Support Centre.

 Another project by Booragoon Rotary

. It was cold and wet enough outside today.

We can only imagine what it's like sleeping in a city doorway

with wet socks, or no socks,

Thank you Wendy Castles and members of Booragoon Rotary.

If you'd like to make a difference around here too Rotar

y will make you feel very welcome.
